Hip replacement op been cancelled

hi everyone feeling so depressed was due to go in hospital on the 4th september for left hip replacement and i got a phone call to say it had been cancelled 5 days before has this happened to any of you and if so how long did you wait for them to send for you was already feeling scared but had built myself up to going in thanks to all your helpful comments any help or info please.

so sorry to hear of posponenment.

I was with one consultant who refused to do RTHR changed to another consultant who was suposed to put camera in hip joint to find out what was going on.

He said Im not wasting my time doing that you need a new hip joint.

It wa s14 days to see new consultant and 44 days to opp date. Unfortunatly pre opp found serious water infection so delayed 28 days. went back on list on monday at 0830 had phoie call at 12.00 Wednesday for opp 0715 next day.

Did not have time to think or worry. So can be extreemly disapointing then come full circle. hope all goes well when it happens - its worth waiting for with a good result.

Hi hippy, sorry 2 hear u got cancelled so close 2 ur surgery 😞 I had the same problem with my left TKR in 2012, all in all my op was cancelled 3 times b4 I had it done, it worked out just under 8 wks from the 1st cancellation 2 actually having surgery, really don't think they understand just how much anxiety this causes people, 2 make it worse I'd already booked all the time off work so they cud arrange cover while I was off so they weren't best pleased with all the date changes, it turned out if they cancelled it again I would have gone over 2 the private clinic which is alongside the main hospital 2 have it done, thing that baffles me is, it wud have been done by the same surgeon that was meant 2 do it in the 1st place @ the main hospital, totally baffled by it all??? Finally had it done, only thing is the joints worked itself loose somehow & I'm now looking @ having my 3rd joint in 4 yrs, I'm just over 6 wks post op on my left hip & due 2 go back on the list 2 have the right hip done asap, this was supoz 2 help with the knee problems but doesn't seem 2 have turned out that way? I'm due 2 see my consultant on 29th of this month, be interesting 2 see what his next step will be, wetha 2 do the right hip or do revised surgery on the left knee again??? Hope you get a call soon, good luck 😊

Aww bless you I know how you feel Ihave a morbid fear of hospitals I got all worked up, I don't think they will keep you waiting that long but try not to get depressed just think of the out come I had my left hip done sept 2 and am on one stick you take care x

So sorry your date was camcelled so soon before you were due to go in . I really don't think they take in to account the wat this makes us feel. Apologies are all well and good but they don't really cut the mustard do they ??? Hope you get word really soon with a new date. If you hear nothing within 2 weeks get on the phone and complain and keep doing so until you get satisfaction. It is so unfortunate that at a time when you are so low anyway they feel the need to do this !! Have you tried phoning your admissions dept at the hospital to see if they have a date in mind ?? I phoned mine and thet were brilliant and very sympathetic, I had my new date within afew days. Good luck with it and keep us all posted as to how you are getting along. Love Maggie xxxxx

Hi Hippy, Sorry to hear this has happened to you.  I was eventually given a date for my THR 7 weeks past the latest date the govt guidelines state. I went in on a Thursday afternoon for next day op. Woken up at 0600 on Fri & denied food or drink due to imminent op. Surgeon saw me at 0930 & said to get ready as he'd start in 30 minutes. 10 minutes later an admin appartachik turned up saying that they'd had some emergency admissions overnight & I'd been cancelled & should go home.  I waited at home a week & then began to threaten I'd be going to my MP.  Eventually taken in within 4 more weeks. I hate to make a fuss, but quite believe that had I not done so I'd be waiting still. So do get no to them & insist that they re-schedule you ASPmad.

Hippy,  I agree with the others here in that the doctors/scheduling nurses etc do not take into account all the prior arrangements we have to make before surgery, ie work time off, care of pets, children, renting medical equipment, the list goes on.  I too was set to go in and the day before got the call it was cancelled for another 5 days, know exactly how you and Tom feel and then whent he date arrived, I got to hospital at 7:30 am for l:00 pm surgery, and l:00 came and went and someone came out at 2 and said they are behind, and will try for 3:30, now my stomach is beyond knots!!!! at 3:30 they came out and said maybe 5:30 (at this point they had to give me intervenous as I was dehydrated) and then  6 the surgeon came out and said could Icome back in two days!!!! WAS HE NUTS...I said no...to which he was not happy...they ended up doing me at 7:30 that night, honestly we are just a number...bear inmind I did ask if a "fresh team" of doctors would be assisting me as I didn't want a doctor who was tired working on me..he said yes, he was the only one that would have been working l2 hours already - which I didn't mind as it is a teaching hospital and lets face it you hardly ever get your actual surgeon doing the surgery!!!!  All said and done, sometimes we just have to gowith the flow and try to remember to take a few deep breaths and start all over again...best of luck and will be looking forward to hearing from you after it is all over!  Patricia

It's very unsettling isn't it! When I got to the hospital I was told that I would have to wait five hours as the woman in my bed was having a blood transfusion which was delaying her discharge. The room was not cleaned before I was admitted. I took photons of the dust balls and graffiti. I complained and they were very freaked out that I had photos as they thought I was going to put them on the internet. As I have said before, it's like being sent to a gulag. That's just how it is. Keep your wits about you and question everything.

Funny you mention the dust balls...while waiting my l2 hours in the pre op room I first hand witnessed the janitor pushing a mop and the same dust from area to area...after he suppedly cleaned the washroom I went in immediately and it still had the same debris around the edges of the room l2 hours later....no surprise then when I got to my room after surgery and witnessed the cleaners coming in to clean the room and bathroom, all in under 5 minutes....they did not wipe down the sink or toilet or empty the trash...I guess in the age of unions "it was someone else's job"...I've never been so dissapointed as this hospital Mount Sianai is one of the best teaching hospitals in Ontario!!!!!

Please don't let this get you down.  I'm 8 weeks post op now but mine was cancelled twice - the first because they wanted me to have a heart echo done and then the day before my op.  Third time lucky and usually when it's cancelled it's for a good reason.  I was the biggest baby ever and was terrified but I know you will have heard this before but please don't be scared because everythi g will be fine.  It is rare for things to go wrong.  So bear with it and try not to let it get you down xx

Aww Bless

Haventy had a THR cancelled but my DEXA scan was cancelled 3 times before I had one and on the morning the scan was supposed to be.

That was only a scan and  I know how I felt......so to have your THR cancelled that must be awful.

Kick up a fuss....dont let them get away with it {well not quietly anyway}

They dont think of all the arrangements we have had to make before going in.

Good Luck....let us know what happens

Love

Eileen

Hi hippy-so sorry about your delayed surgery. I really know about the "psyc yourself up" aspect of this process. I would be very discouraged too. Your response sounds perfectly justified. I know there is nothing I can say to lesson your disappointment. However, I empathize with you...good luck

Do you know WHY it was cancelled.

I know here in the U.S. often a person needs to wait to make sure all other vitals are good, like heart for a big one....

More likely to be contracted out cleaning services, non-unionised and paid a pittance.

thank you all for your support and your replies soon as i hear anything i will post bless you all xxx

Hi hippy,  I feel your disappointment, I was due to have remedial nerve root injections this Thursday and received a telephone call today cancelling.  They informed me it would probably be end of October now and to wait for my appointment letter.  Like you I had a hip replacement cancelled as my surgeon was going on holiday but I got another date within a few weeks of the original appointment.  I wish you the best of luck with your operation and please don't be scared.

Hi Hippy

I was due to go in for a hip revision at the end of August, but had to wait six weeks after dental work. Got a new date of 7th October, then was rung up last week and told that because there werent enough beds, they had to cancel some operations and so had to postpone for a week. New date 14th October. This is unsettling enough a month or so before, so can't imagine what you feel like less than a week. But you WILL be able to psych yourself up again, and I really hope you get there this time.

I think the worst must be what happened to RosshireBuff, to actually be in hospital all prepped up (and no breakfast! ) and waiting all day only to be told it is cancelled.

Keep nagging for a new date, especially if you have to make arrangement like peole coming in to help you after the op or time off work (sorry, don't know what your situation is). As an old "hippy" I remember being really scared beforehand, but it honestly is not as nearly as bad as you think, and once it is done, you will hopefully get rid of the worst of the pain and can concentrate on your recovery.

Take care,

Jean
