Hip replacement - pain after prolonged walking and standing

Hi, has anybody experienced excessive pain in operated leg, from hip through thigh and encompassing knee? I am 18 weeks post op and thought everything was going well.    I aquajog and have exercise class in pool 5 days a week and all is well, but when i do long walks like they say you should i am awake all night with excrutiating pain in operated leg and sometimes both knees!  I haven't taken pain meds, except the odd paracetemol, since my 6 week check and have managed the bike, bath and do the exercises but walking just hurts.  Is it just me?  I mentioned it to my cons last week when i had a check and he thinks it is coming from my back!  I did mention that i hadn't had it before but he is organising an MRI anyway!  It's taking much longer than i expected to get back to normal but this forum helps so much as there is always somebody worse off than me, so anybody in a similar boat?

Hi Jennifer,

sounds familiar to me!  Mine does actually come from my back, the main culprit being the Sciatic nerve, which causes severe pain in my thigh and knee. It's made much worse by exercising.  You sound so active, which is great, but an MRI will show up any problem in your spine.  I find it really annoying!  The awful hip pain has gone, but i can,t shift this one!  Not fair is it?    Hope you feel better soon.

Best wishes.  Sue.    I forgot to say, anything which stretches the nerve makes it worse.  Great!

Hi

Mine is coming from my back......referred pain.  They kep disagreeing . Was it my back was it my hip then decided that they could do nothing for my back so would replace the hip {which needed it anyway}  but its still very sore

See what the MRI says and take it from there

Meantime.....dont play catch up with your pain....stay on top of it {as much as you can} You dont get any medals for not taking pain killers

Take casre

Thanks sue, glad to see i am not alone.  It is annoying though as i only had hip pain before and now i have aching legs, kind of bugs me when the consultant said that i would be able to do anything i did before but i would never run a marathon!!  Luckily i didn't want to run but i did want to be able to walk without pain.  Still, as i see from the forum, everybody is different and the consultant isn't God, so i must be grateful for whatever i have.

Thanks Eileen, will see what MRI says.  I worry about pain meds though, i know you said to keep on top of it, but if the experts can't sort it out just how long do you take meds for?  Don't you get so used to them that they don't work as effectively?

Don,t worry, you will be able to walk pain free.  If it is Sciatica, it may come in attacks, so that in between you are OK.  As you say, we are all different.

you feel cheated don,t you?!   It is still early days, healing can take such a long time in some people.  Our poor bodies do go through it with this operation, it's just that our brains are impatient and we want to rush it!

keep your chin up, you are doing great and you should be proud of yourself.

love.  Sue

I get this kind of pain when I over do it or do some thing I shouldn't be doing. Like using a chair to climb on to reach something. I had a big set back because of this a few weeks ago and it has taken me a while to get back. I just back off for a few days and let my body heal/rest. I am 5 mo post op and a healthy, active person. It takes a long time to recovery from this surgery. Could be six months to a year so I've learned it does more harm than good to rush it. Hope everything works out for you.

Hello Jennifer,

If al was going well and you were exercising that much, it may well be your leg muscles, which have been thru quite a trauma with the op, are beginning to "protest". Some physio may help, not just exercises, but deep tissue massage.
