So 20 months, loads of xrays, bone scan later..... Seen the consultant re the hot spot shown up on my bone scan. I thought it was an infection but bloodwork shows no. He thinks it is a fracture and says it should heal (when ? 20 months on...) so second opinion is required as i should not keep refracturing by walking.
Anyone else had this issue?
Can you tell me how long and what happened to get to the pain free result and will it keep reoccurring?
So sorry to hear about your troubles...can't offer any advice as I've not exerpienced this or know of anyone in the same boat as you...but I'm sure you will get lots of advice on this forum....all the best
Hi,
I'm sorry that you still have problems, sorry I can't offer any solutions but found your post interesting as I am also 18months post THR and in extreme pain. I've had many tests which have shown nothing and now am going to see a revisioon surgeon, I have already compiled a list of questions and will ask him if there is any possibility of me having a fracture.
I know just how bad it is being in constant pain and do hope you get relief soon, in the meantime keep in touch, I find it consoling reading this forum and finding I'm not the only one with pain .
I am 4 yrs soon with anterior hip and ended up with the major side effects one can get from the anterior....femoral nerve damage and IT band damage and then of course the leg discrepancy. I'm a huge mess from it all....do my best to keep going.
I don't believe I have infection nor fracture but my issues all seem to be nerve damage and the leg length....knocked my body off big time.
Do you get ENOUGH Vit D and magnesium both needed for bone support and strong bones. Many take too much calcium and not ENOUGH of the others. I've posted about the magnesium deficiency that goes on and on in too many people. Read up on magnesium and bones. j
Hi
The nearest I can come to that is after my 2nd THR I was doing an NHS exercise and suddenly crack!!!! My leg collapsed...this was 4 weeks post op.
Eventually they discovered I had osteoporosis. When I went into hospital when it happened it was x rayed, and I was told that "you have fractured the greater trochanter bone" which I think is the femur. "there is nothing we can do about it, it will heal itself but it will take a long time....its now 7 months {not as long as you} and I'm still on 2 crutches!!!!
Does that sound reasonably similar to yours?.
The pain in that leg is still very bad...pain killers arent touching it. So its not just a matter of not being mobile...its a matter of being in constant pain

Hi byteme
Two years after THR Still have pain in the groin/ hip down the thigh and over the top of the knee,Also hip feels loose.
Having hip revision in october but not shure what they are going to do as xrays look ok and no infection.Leg is shorter but not much, also the hip off set could be adjusted.
Might find out more at pre-op end off august 23rd
Hi all,had my pre-op a week ago now have plenty info as to whats to be done
loose implant so its going to be replaced, bone graft, and hip offset also leg lengh
all reset.
the op should be about 3 hours then 48 hours in the hdu then 12 days on the ward then 6 weeks recovery
My op is on the 27th october but could be earlyer if there is a cancellation
So sorry to hear about your revision...it is such a shame that some people have to go through the journey a second time....it is like the lottery why sometimes it goes all wrong, perhaps sometimes it is doctor error, or just the odds, who knows but it is the patient that is left with the stress, not to mention sometimes the expense! Best of luck to you, Patricia
Hello joy, just so you know, i was at costco today and walked right by a huge bottle of magnesium citrate and remembering what you said, i bought it. I never took magnesium before, hope it works...thanks
it will "work" did you do a search on magnesium deficiency...
you may not "feel" anything but it's working....it would be good if you had labs down on magnesium levels....you could be shocked...
magnesium is needed in so much of our body. start slowly and build up...if loose bowels happen, then back down. I take 500mg 3 times per day....
Hi, so terrible you are having to go back in but good that they are wanting to make it right.
I too have the pain in the groin, thigh and on down into the knee. Went in for the corticosteroids injection and they did the dye thing too to look at that tendon. They think it's stretched because of the length of the neck so my OS is talking revision with a new implant with not such a long neck.
I was supposed to go back to work so not sure whats going to happen now.
Sure hope everything works for you!!
Boy, what people go thru with these replacements, certainly nothing near any perfect about the outcomes.....and how so many come out with different issues, groin pain is the only pain I don't have after replacement....
I continually shake my head at these replacements.....often think it's been a bad dream. if ony.....j
Hi
I know.....I think to myself why did I ever have that 2nd THR I'm so much worse off now than before. BUT.....it was because it was osteoporosis that if fractured easily so i suppose it could have fractured doing something else whether I had the THR or not....or so I keep trying to convince myself

no crack - just pain and more pain...
Hey Patricia, how are you doing now ?? I hope your recovery is still going well. Have you managed to get out and about yet ? Or are you still stuck indoors ? I'm finally going in for pre op assessment this week, so hopefully surgery is just 3 or 4 weeks away now. I can't wait as the pain and inactivity is driving me up the wall !! Glad you're still on this site. Love Maggie from Scotland xxxxx
Hi Maggie, I'm still here, every morning I get my coffee and read through all the comments (you U.K. hippies are up earlier then me here in Canada)...always manage to pick up some helpful hints and its nice to see how everyone is coping.....My big outings are of course physio twice a weeks, and I managed to have someone drive me to the hairdressers (those nasty roots), and Sept 3 I got for my first post op with the surgeon...I have my list of questions....I do sit outside but only stay on my patio as my grassed area is very uneven and I don't want to topple over....using just one cane and around the kitchen (because it is small and has counters on either side) I don't use it, as I'm usually grabbing onto the counter, fridge, etc. I know I can't drive yet...I sit on a chair and pretend I have to use my right leg to press on the gas or brake and and my thigh just burns (I'm 5 weeks)....I'm not going back to my part time job in retail until end of October as I would have to stand for 4 hours at a time and Im not in any rush, but hopefully I'll be going on more outings now if I can get someone to drive me....though I don't know about the rest of the hippies but I'm so paranoid of tripping on uneven ground or someone bumping into me and I have to suddenly move out of their way..it is nerveracking, but I guess the boredom of staying in much longer will spur me on! My excitment for today is having someone over to try to trap either rat or red squirrel that is my garden shed making an absolute mess of chewing on the walls, insulation etc....thanks you for your note....its nice to here from someone that understands the journery we are on....have a great day!
My post now has a result. Having obtained a second opinion on the NHS, today I have been promised a revision. I will be added to the list in 2 months after losing another 8lb in weight which I shall do my damndest to do.
Hi
Great news......thats certainly an incentive to lose the weight isnt it?

Hi
I meant to say.......I mentioned earlier in your thread that I had a THR 7 and a half months ago and 1 month into recovery doing an NHS exercise fractured the femur
I saw the consultant for the 2nd time in June and he said thisng were going OK {it will heal itself nothing they can do} he would see me in 6 months time.....Thats approx Christmas
Well 7 and a half months on crutches is enough and I'm getting sorer and didnt want to wsait until Sept so rang on Fri and Hey Presto....got an appoiuntment with him for Mon [TONIGHT] not bad services so 6pm tonight I'll know if he has any other suggestions
Love
Eileen
I'm so pleased to hear your news and hope that it will be successful for you this time.
I also went for a second opinion today, had xrays taken then, after the examination which was extremely painful as he twisted my leg into various directions, I was told I needed to have a blood test and an MRI. The surgeon doesn't think there's a problem with the prosthesis but that my pain is a nerve pain so back for more tests - will this nightmare ever end?
I hope you manage to lose the weight, wish I could do the same.
