My son is 15 years old and needs a hip replacement due to avascular necrosis that was caused when pins were inserted into his hip a year ago because he had developed SUFE.
The other option he has is having his hip fused but we do not honeslty think that is the best option as he already has very limited mobility and that will just make it even worse.
Of course I am very worried (as his mum) but at the same time I want him to have some of his life back, he has really missed out on a lot.
He has to make the decision on what to do, if he decides to have the hip replacement then he will have it done at Stanmore.
I just wondered if anyone else so young has had a replacement - it's all very scary.
Hi I've had both hips replaced because of avascular necrosis... I was not as young as either of you but 38 is not that old either..... It has given me back full mobility and a new least of life. As along as you excersise to keep them flexible and watch what you do ie not do anything too daft they will last many years before they need replacing again.
Hi there, that's reassuring thanks! That's what the surgeon has said to my son, that he won't be abe to do somethings but will be able to do so much more than he can currently do. He has got to go back to Stanmore on the 2nd November with his decision and I think it is definately going to be the replacement.
I had a THR aged 40 this year, and can honestly say it has been a blessing. The pain I had pre op was unbearable and now I have my life back. I`m sorry that your son and boyfriend need a THR so young, but can reassure you that it is a worth while op. I hope the appointment goes well on MOnday.
I wondered what happened to your son, if he is still walking or awaiting a hip replacement?
My son had SUFE 3 years ago, and is still on crutches, he is 13 (nearly 14).
We have just had a referral to RNOH Stanmore and are awaiting an appointment.
At one point our surgeon suggested a hip fusion, but I think that the surgery thereafter is very limiting, we are just considering a femoral head re-shape and triple pelvic osteotomy, but this is very big surgery, so we may wait until he stops growing and have a replacement at 17/18.
Are you on any of the SUFE facebook pages? I started SUFE Slipped Upper Femoral (Capital) Epiphysis a year ago, and it is good to share experiences etc and it would be great to have your contribution.
