Hip replacement. (Swollen leg)

I HAD HIP REPLACEMENT FIVE WEEKS AGO

AND I HAVE A VERY SWOLLEN LEG WHICH IS PULLING ME BACK PLUS GOT SHINGLES tWO DAYS AFTER RETURNING HOME.

Sympathies - shingles is about the last thing you need! - I hope at least your painkillers will make it bearable.

Do the exercises, keep your leg elevated when you can, and use ice packs frequently including after any exercise.

I am at nearly six weeks. I have found that resting and sleeping with a pillow underneath my operated leg works well (ie instead of between my legs) - I have had no swelling for some time now, and I think the slight elevation may be a factor.

Good luck!

Hi. I had hip replacement surgery on March 6th and my leg, especially the incision is still swollen most of the time, worse at night. i mentioned this to my surgeon and she said that it is perfectly normal to have swelling for possibly a year to a year and a half. Not very encouraging but at least it is normal. The ice and elevation helps a bit but not permanent relief. Good luck

swelling of leg normal plus bruising. sorry to hear you have shingles on top of your op.

Poor you, my sister had shingles last year, not a pleasant period. Swelling is normal mine lasted until around week twelve, if was a big op.

So sorry about your shingles.
Thats really not what you need on top of everything.
It might be that you are very stressed, as that is a big factor.
Try to relax and put your leg up when ever you can, preferable higher than your heart.
I really hope you shingles and swelling will go soon.
