Hip replacement

Had a thr 7 weeks ago but am still using a cane because of inner thigh pain.  The doctor says it's muscle pain but gave no suggestion as to what could help it.  Has anyone had this problem afterba thr?

Hi jan45sandy12516

Don't know if this will help. But I had surgery in February an the physiotherapist recommended that if you can stand in the shower with a warm setting around the surgical site for a few minutes the while it is still wet and using the thumb, gently massage in some baby oil then gently pat dry, or massage while in the bath and repeat with the oil.

work in the oil on wet skin as it is easier to massage in and try it for a couple of weeks.

NOTE: Do not do this on the surgical area if your wound is not completely healed or you have any kind of sutures/staples. But it also helps on the whole of the quad muscle.

Let us know how you go.

hi

sorry what is a thr?

marey thr = total hip replacement

thanks mark....and i'm a trained nurse!! well many moons ago.

i think your suggestions to jan are very helpful. i would add the same encouragement jan plus keep walking keep exercising ...push thro it....you're doing great xxxxxxxxx

thinking of you !

Hi marey,

encouragement is a good thing, as you know with orthopaedic surgery can be tough especially the physio that follows.

The only thing that I don't understand is although surgery is on the joint, why is there muscle weakness afterwards?, the only thing that I can think of is the muscle displacement somewhere during the surgery.

What would be your views?

HI MARK

I agree...could be some displacement....but if jan is able to stretch and mobilise as much as possible the muscles will adjust to their new location if they've been moved around.

clearly you're a thoughtful person...with some training??....or are you an expert patient?

hope jan comes on soon to hear the care and concern being expressed for her.

definitely the massage you suggest would help together with mobilisation...but its furthermore extremely important to try to walk in the correct position...if necessary pushing gently but persistently thro any pain to get straight....otherwise the muscles would tighten in the wrong way and cause tension.....just at this time whilst recovering from any inflammation theres a good chance of resetting them so the muscles relax into their new location if thats whats happened.

so sorry this is diff for you jan. do ask for some physio... you can seek a self referral now...did you know that? no need for GP to generate ...but the surgery could perhaps make the appointment on your behalf as sounds like you need some support.

think you've been very helpful and caring mark.

best wishes to you both.

Hi marey

Sorry to say that I am no expert, but I have had a total of 16 operations involving orthopaedic surgeons to get me walking correctly with another 4 to go in the near future.

This is all due to poor health which includes diabetes, arthritis and cmt (Charcot Marie Tooth Disease) I won't explain the last one, but just type CMT on the google search engine. But I have arthritis taking a hold of my neck & upper back as well.

Anyway I don't want to depress your evening and catch you later.

Thank you  to you and Mark for giggedtioms and support.

Hi Mark,

yes I'm trying to push through the pain and walk correctly.  My surgeon also said one hip is higher than the other and made a prescription for an inner sole which he said would help my gait correct itself in time.  Thanks for your suggestions and support.

Hi Marley.

also forgot to add that my surgeon does not suggest any pt but I'm doing some exercises that I found online hoping that I can strenghten the muscles around the surgery site.  I'm an exercise nut so doing nothing but walking was hatd to do.

If I was you I would contact the surgeon/consultant and ask him to refer you to a physiotherapist.

Hi jan45sandy12516

Insoles' will help, but if your still using crutches/walking stick I would not use the insole's yet as they will be uncomfortable/hard.

What I also found useful was to put some marbles into a plastic bag and massage near the surgical are (not on it) and that will cover a wider area.

When you are feeling stronger in the replaced hip let us know and I will suggest a stronger exercise.

Hi Mark,

thanks again, Imwill try it out.

welcome! the support was easy....not so sure about the giggedtoms!!?

any pt?

well as an exercise 'nut' you'll get a handle on this in no time! best wishes

marey.

mark ...would you like to start your own discussion so i can follow you? PM me the title...unless jan doesn't mind if we speak here....but i'd really like to understand your condition and how you are.

you're going the op route so have had some deformity?

i'm immed trying to think about what you can do.

tell me how you are and what you've been trying.

marey

All that I can recommend is to use the marbles gently to start and get mobile as much as possible and use the pain medication as required.

what may help as well is to lie flat on your bed and gentle tighten & relax the upper quad muscle.

also lie on your good side, gently point your toes towards your head and try lifting slightly.

do each one about x10 to start. But STOP if the pain starts to get worse.

Also only do them when you are ready, don't do them if you are in discomfort already.

I will put on a separate page and will be there to answer any questions and the page will be q/a

thx marey

Marey Forgot to mention that I will be on from 2pm
