I have been following this site for over a year to see if someone could help with my dilemma. I had a THR right side in September 2013. From the beginning it hurt when weight bearing. I followed my instructions to the letter had physio, excercised (I was quite fit anyway) in the end physio couldn't do anymore for me. I went back to my consultant after giving myself 9months hoping I would improve. He xrayed me and said my cup (ceramic uncemented) was probably loose causing the pain. I can't walk any distance and less than I walked before the op. My consultant is one of the best, highly recommended, I trust him implicitly.
i was told I can't have a bone scan until 2years post op? I am on the waiting list for a revision, approx time December..
What if it's a problem with my bones? I have had blood tests for infection, had a bone density scan before my op which was only slightly below average.
I broke my arm 2years ago it didn't heal after 5months of agony so they pinned it. My THR was because of AVN. HELP do I wait for a bone scan or go for the revision, I'm so frightened it might not work or even end up worse. I am 57, in full time employment and love my job but finding it very difficult.
Hi Julie, so sorry for what your going through I would wait for bone scan and get second opinion, I had revision aabout year ago cant work on disabililty i have nerve damage and still going to physical therapy 3x week. Everybody diffrent but just be sure you really need revised thr for me its been long recovery. take care
Sorry to hear your about your condition. I have Avascular Nercrosis as well. Started in my left hip and I'm sure it's in my knees. Since 2008, I've had core decompression surgery, spinal fusion L2-S1 and hip replacement surgery twice. I don't want to spend next six years in and out of hospitals. I hope your hip improves and they only need to cement your cup to hold it in place. Good luck.
O you poor thing, I hope fellow AVN sufferers will respond with advice. It seems very drastic to have a revision and does AVN Occur as a result of THR or vice versa. Do you know the reason for your broken arm not healing? Did you SEE yr hip X-ray? It sounds as if you'll never know what's caused the loosening if indeed that's what it is. Awful. To be assaulted once for invasive major surgery is traumatic but a second time so soon for anyone is unimaginable. But, you know, it will get better. It will be just time you lose. It has to be an improvement....... Necrosis is a horrible diagnosis. Our bodies are constantly being attacked by pathogens. At least there are procedures we can submit to. Go with what the surgeon can do; you have faith in him. Let usknow
I find it hard to believe the cup is loose according to your consultant.
I am 56 years and am a carpenter. I do heavy work.
Being is no longer an issue because due to your surgery it will drain out your strength. Muscle strength and power.
Now, if you followed what your surgeon stated follow all precaution don't go past 90 degrees, don't cross leg beyond midline, don't move your toes inward, don't bend over beyond 90 degree, no activities, walk with walker or crutches and slept with a pillow or wedge between your legs for 4 weeks your uncemented cup should of adhered to your bone.
I followed everything on your list to the letter, so much so my friends thought I was being too cautious. I Didn't feel my leg was strong enough to drive so I even left that longer. I go to Pilates twice per wk can't even do my hip rotations now so you tell me why my hip hasn't 'adhered'! I was put on the waiting list in September it is approx 3months I am NHS. That's a pretty good waiting time here.
My muscle strength is good. I am self employed, manufacture and fit soft furnishings so my job is weight bearing similar to yours which I am finding difficult.
Why do you find it hard to believe the cup is loose? Is there another reason why the pain should still be intense?
Hi Julie, bone scan I had done after my thr revised showed no bone regrowing . I had so much bone lose I'm at one year still not 100% still in physical therapy 3x week. I can't even do thread mill. Bone scan will show alot more weekdays going on! Jackie
Hi Julie, No at 6 months after thr revised I was having so much pain I went back to my doctor he got me right in for bone scan within week. I have hip displaysia from birth I was born without hip socket. I just walk around my neighborhood to mail box and back I have pain in my knee hard to walk long distance. I just keep on moving . Jackie
Hi Jackie I'm in the uk. Eileen the consultant said bone scan I didn't ask what he meant I presumed it was to reiterate what he thinks is wrong or find out another cause if there is one. He said I couldn't have one until 2years post op, unfortunately at the time I didn't ask why I had to wait,.
I just had mine revised after the 3 month period. I'm 4 weeks out now and just having healing pings but doing better then the first time and healing faster then the first surgery.
I'm 49 and in the US.
If it's an option to revise get on the list and handle it. They can screw your cup in. They didmine.
