Hip replacement

Hi everyone had a the done on the 31st October doing very eell, pain being helped with paracetamol, only trouble I having is sleeping at night time. Any one help please, I am laying on non operative side but just can't skeep.

Hi diane, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I had mine done 15 oct and am only just sleeping well!  I take my meds, mug of milo, put pillow between legs and sleep on non operated side.  Sometime in the night i roll over and have a couple of hours on my back, still with the pillow between my legs, but i can't lie on operated side yet.  I find that a little nap in the afternoon compensates for loss of sleep at night and if all else fails i watch tv on demand on my ipad.

I had my op on 11th August and though recovery has been good i still cant sleep on my operated side it is to painful. Sleeping however does get better and i sleep on my other side as well as my back now.Hope you have a speedy recovery

Hi Diane,

I had my THR on Sept 30th. Stopped taking meds at two weeks and had to take an over the counter PM medicine (with my doctors approval) for a few nights to help me sleep. Although I haven't tried to sleep on my operated side yet, it's still pretty sensitive, I am sleeping pretty good on my other side with pillow between my knees. I think I've just gotten used to the pillow and fortunately that is the side I slept on pre-op. It's just going to take some time.

Hang in there,

Kathee

Hi Diane

You should be sleeping {or trying tobiggrin} on your back for the first 6 weeks.

After that you either sleep on your back or on your operated side. If you sleep on the good side there is a chance of dislocation.......your new THR is on the top and if it falls over during the nightthats when the chance of dislocation occurs.

I know its not easy...., I've had both mine done and found that was the worse part of it........I just surrounded my self with pillows when I slept {or tried to} on my back, had to try different things and I was taking paracetamol as well

Sorry tats not what you want to hear

It will pass

thank you all for replies I will just try and hang on in there, just glad had operation done. Still using one crutch but getting out abit now for walks , just know when I done enough x

Hi Eileen and Dianne,

I love reading your advice Eileen, I always learn something from you...did NOT know that I could dislocate op hip if it was on top!!

With that being said I was told the same as you - on back, pillow between legs for at LEAST 6/8 weeks, then try op side off an on until comfortable, but dr did not say anything about non op leg!!

Will try to stay between back and op leg from now on.....I heard that although it seems many people "just get back to normal" for the most part most patients have certain limitations for life...that is not necessarily a bad thing, but we have to think before we twist, turn, bend, pick up heavy objects, etc....I don't mind as I consider this surgery an investment and I'm so lucky (like winning the lottery) I came out of it ok....here's hoping the other hip goes as smooth next summer!

We are getting some cold weather here....time to hibernate!!!

Have a nice weekend,

Hi Patricis

I didnt even knowif my explanation made sense   LOL

My physio said I had to lie on my back.....full stop!!!

My consultant said after 6 weeks try the operated side...I preferred his advice so listened to him  LOL

I had mine done on 17th oct got a pain like muscle pain in my buttock is that normal get a bit paranoid as physio told me not to use critchrs but i have a limp and dont feel confident but she said if i want to drive  i need to be off crutches. Any advice thx

Hi Diane! I had my op of both hips on 1:st september. I had sleeping problem too but now is much better. It is quite usuaI with sleeping disturbances after Hip Replacement op. I could sleep on both size after 8 weeks post op and with the pillow between my legs. I change side very often during the night but it goes well. It is nothing comparing with pain before opsmile

Hi Gillian!

My physiotherapist told me to absolutly use crutches as long as I have a limp. It is a crucial rule, she säd. That's strange, they give such different advice.

Hi Diane

I had my THR on 8th Aug. Even before op I was a restless sleeper, But read some advice here about sleeping on a duvet. What I did was use it like a sleeping bag, being cocooned was comforting and it stopped you in yr sleep rolling onto side.   After a couple of weeks I started rolling onto my un-op side for short periods and with pillow tucked between to stop op side dropping down.  Even now my op side is uncomfortable to lie on for long periods.

Yes ive read that as well. Going to see consultant on wednesday i will speak to him. Thanks

Hi Diane - I had my THR on 5 Nov so I am just a few days behind you.  This is my second hip operation as I had a resurface seven years ago on the other hip.  I have been sleeping on my front (I crawl in from the bottom of the bed) and this seems to work well.  I have also found that I can get to a 45° angle by lying on the front of my operated hip (hope that makes sense) - not quite lying on my side, but pretty damn close smile.  Hope this helps.

Thank you all for all suggestions, hopefully will get better dion, getting about s bit better been just under 5 weeks since thr and slowing getting round without crutch,  but limping abit. Any one else have this problem

I didn't chooitse to have a thr - has a fall and it was a necessity.  Had the op on 23 September and hardly slept at all while in hospital even with help.  When I got home it was just as bad - sleeping on my back caused intense pain in my knee.  I cannot sleep on op side but laying on my good side with a pillow between my legs did improve thiings.  Now, however I can lay on my stomach which was my preferred way before my fall and being able to sleep for several hours really does make me feel a whole lot better.  I've been told that surgery after a fall does mean a somewhat longer recovery period but I'm looking forward to things being back to "normal" fairly soon.
