Hello paula
I went to hip school two weeks ago and I wasn't impressed at all. If you are issued with "my recovery pack " booklets read them , they are very informative.
Hope your experience with HS will differ from mine.
Hi Paula
I could be wrong but I thought Hip School was only in the USA?????
I've had 2 THR's {North East}.....all I've hd is a preassessment, {BP height weight etc}..........Then a group physiotherapy appointment.
That was with a group of people due to have replacements soon and we were given exercises and told what would happen etc and the physiotherapit answered any questionswe had

Here in the States with each surgery, I have had to attend a 2 hour HIP SCHOOL prior to surgery or they will cancel my surgery. It is basically an informational gathering where they help you understand which procedure you will be receiving, helpful tips for doing practical things after the surgery, safety issues and restrictions.
I am sorry you have to wait so long. My revision is next month, February. Yes I agree that not all THR.s are successful. Hope you next one fixes everything!

I never had any information about the surgeries ( 4 joint replacements so far) at all. No pamphlets , nothing. It's why I am here getting the info I need. Wish they did give us information about what to expect.,
im in US.
Wow Lee, that is terrible! Even though I do not like to have too much information about the gory details, I have appreciated information. I sure hope you have been able to glean what you need from all of us.

This site has been wonderful! I've already sent for a reacher tool and a combination long shoehorn/ dressing assist and sock helper. I wouldn't have known except for coming here. Also given me an idea of time frames and and preparations . Go to pre-op testing in the morning and surgery Friday.
wish me luck!
Hi Lee
It's weird how every country is so different.....thats why I always like to make sure i know the country the person i from thats posting to know whether to take advice or notI'm in the UK thats why I always put UK beside my name when finishing a post.......

When I went for my first appointment at the hospital, I was given a booklet by the physiotherapist. I found this very helpful as it explained everything from start to finish and showing certain exercises to do before the op and during the 6 weeks afterwards and then some others to be done after the 6 weeks. It also answered a lot of questions and things which may worry you. It is very reassuring to read. When I went for my 6-8 week check up, I went to the Hip Clinic where the physio showed us a video and explained what we could do now and what we will be able to do after 3 months and what it would be wise not to do ever again. I was also given a little card which stated what operation I had had and may be helpful in the future if you want to go on holiday on an aeroplane , as my hip will probably set off the alarm at the airport. All very helpful.
I also attended a hip class that was a few hours long (USA). Mine was through Kaiser Permanente, for the most part I really felt like they have their act together when it comes to guiding the patient through the whole process prior to surgery. They even sent me home with a DVD that showed some of the surgery.
I like all of that except the video...did you watch it? I could not. I would become faint! Haha!
Haha, yes I did. I'm usually fine with stuff like that...but I had to stop it in the middle (was eating lunch too). I did go back and finish watching it, and even watched it again with my husband. But I think I just didn't expect how aggressive they have to be during the surgery. I think it was the hammering that got to me the most.
Just the vision of hammering causes me to shutter! Thank God for anesthesia!
a hip school is where the people sue to have the operation will attend and given infos of what will happen, and will be shown to how to do the exercises.
During this class you will be requested to bring the measurement of your bed, chair's etc... to ensure that they are of the correct height. At the end of the class you will be given the chance to ask any questions you may have.
Im in the UK and it was mandatory to attend hip school before you could have the opp. I found it useful, got to meet my care team, have a look at the prosthetic they would be using and what the needle looked like for the blood clot injection. They also went through everything that would happen start to finish. It was also held in the day room of the ward you stay on which was nice. Personally I found it very useful.
Jennifer, UK, day 6 of a very success THR 😁
Hi Jennifer
What part of the UK are you in? I'm in the Noth East and it wasnt mandatory for me.....I've had 2 THR's Last one was a year ago.

Hi Eileen, I'm London based the hospital was Guys. I've been 100% impressed with them throughout the whole process.
I agree that the differences are strange. Lucky there are places like this where we can all compare notes ☺
Jennifer, uk
Hi Jennifer
It is strange.........but as long as things are OK who cares about hip school,
or physiotherapy session {group} that I had to go to LOL
