Hi fellow hipsters,
Well I have finally had my initial appointment with the Consultant. It went very well and he gave me a dvd to watch which he says will explain everything.
My only concern is that there is no physio.suggested as a follow-up and he says the exercises are explained in the dvd (I haven't watched it yet as I would like the family to watch it together this evening so they are also informed).
Don't you think that physio is a must for a few sessions post op? Or, will the exercises as shown on the dvd suffice?
I am pretty scared as I broke an ankle in 2008 and the whole operation and recovery was a disaster, resulting in my having a limp. This wasn't in England though.
Many thanks
Carole
Hi , I wasn't referred for physio till my 6 week check up . Am 9 weeks on Thursday and have my first physio . I think I am doing well but it will be good to get some reassurance and advice on a slight limp I have without crutches .
Mary
The exercises they suggest are very simple so that you carry them out without any supervision. Exercises consist of, for example, muscle clenches, foot and ankle raises, leg swinging and other such tasks that can be shown with simple diagrams. You'll be fine!
Hello caro le. Yes. Do have rehab. Unless you are very disciplined, you wont do them by yourself. I live in Andalucía, And they dont give rehab after hip op's, which is really silly. They are wonderful inevery other way, medical-wise.
Hi Mary, the Consultant said that my leg would feel shorter due to contraction but both legs should be the same after about a month.
I will have to wait and see. Just passed on this info to you . I don't know whether your Consultant mentioned anything
Hi Carole - The exercises are very basic but will assist your recovery if you follow it to the letter. Do not try and do too much as it will only set you back.
My hospital follow up with the physio is approx 5 months after the op in 4 weeks time !! However I did see my own physio privately when my back was tight some 8 weeks after the THR and he eased it but told me that everything I was doing was perfect.
Thanks for that he didn't . Said muscles needed strentghening .
Hi Carole
I had only 1 physio appointment after leaving hospital which was a check really that all was OK, she just watched me walk down the corridor to her office.
In hospital I had a couple of physio sessions one on the stairs and the other walking round my room.
It appears to depend on where you live as to how much you get, but I don't feel that I've been left out.
