Suffering severe pain in my right hip and leg, Inwas referred to Mr Holt (orthopaedic surgeon, Cheltenham)twelve months ago and was given an X-ray (no scan) Two months later, I was given a hipbone steroid injection which unfortunately didn't alleviate the pain. Because this was so a member of his team concluded, even though the xray showed wear and tear, that the pain was caused by either bursitis or a trapped nerve. I was sent to the physiotherapist which didn't help much. He diagnosed severe osteoarthritis.
Twelve months later still suffering chronic pain and on a cocktail of pain killing medication (ibroprufen, codeine paracetemol four times a day, the pain is still with me. I have another appointment with Mr Holt shortly but have lost confidence in him. Can you specify which surgeon does your operation, if so, can anyone recommend a good hip replacement surgeon in the Glos area and can anyone recommend a more efficient pain killer(s) ? I would be so grateful for your help. Thankyou

Hi, I too had severe hip pain but the steroid injection was wonderful for 10 weeks but then back to pain. Unfortunately my consultant told me a hip replacement was only way forward. I also had severe knee issues so chose to have knee done first, now 4+ weeks post op and hip is worse than the TKR.
I have great faith hi both knee (Mr Shaw) and hip specialists but in North West so maybe too far for you. Mr Mohammed has designed tools to allow for hip arthroscopy, my arthritis is beyond this but my daughter has had three and doing okay. Google him, he is good.tramadol was better for me than codeine .

Hi, I too have arthritis in my hip. I can't say I've been in severe pain but the pain has lessened since I had 6 sessions with a chiropractor. I also use Flexiseq but did not see an improvement till I'd used it for about a month. I also take a Glucosamine supplement. I'm hoping to avoid a replacement for as long as possible. However, if you're still in a lot of pain, I'd ask to get another opinion. Apparently the op is not half so bad as the knee replacement and I know several people who have recovered well. Hope you get something sorted.

It's a gel that you put on around the joint. It doesn't contain any drugs but is supposed to lubricate the joint. You can buy it in any pharmacy - Lloyd's, Boots, even Tesco. It is rather expensive though (about £18). You can get it cheaper by buying multi packs online. I can't say for definite if it helps but I've found the joint is looser since I've been using it regularly. It's a bit of a fuss to put on as you've got to dab it on, not rub in, and leave it dry (about 10 minutes). This isn't easy in the hip area!
It might be worth you 'googling' it and reading up about it first.

Istipation which codeine did. . I preferred tramadol too . . it didn't give me the horrific constipation which codeine did. .I'm in Tenerife, so can't help with the surgeon . . but I think in UK you can ask for details of how many successful operations he has done. . you don't want either a beginning, or someone about to retire!
