hi all 6 weeks post op decided to walk into town today with one walking stick did a bit of shopping .walking back all up hill can't believe how weak my leg feels took me all my time to put one foot in front of the other
Wow but you did it. I always forget that if I fgo downhill, which is easy because gravoity is a great helper, the going up hill is really hard and those calves will complain. So now one day I walk uphill first till I start getting tired and then turn around and downhill is a lot easier. Also if you use a walker with a seat it becomes an instant bench to rest. After resting for a few minutes, I continue. I have to always remind me that the getting back can be as challenging spcially when the legs get tired.
The hill walking worries me! My surgery is on the 22nd. When I start going outside to walk after surgery, my walk will take me down hill and then back up to come home. I think that instead I will go round and round in the cul-de-sac!
Annie, that's all I did walked three doors extra each time till I could walk the whole cul de sac. Good luck with the op. X
hi Jean, well done, I couldnt do that at 6weeks even though I was off crutches no sticks by then. You will build up strength. Took me six months to feel well and ok again. Woke up one morning and felt suddenly really well. It's major surgery remember so you will feel like this whilst your body recovers. Earlier in the week I was running round with a roundabout with my grandson and husband on. Definitely a new lease of life. X
Hi jean
Wow 6 weeks and into town! Well done next time get a taxi back as you must be careful not to over do it. Little and often you don't need to do a marathon. The muscles are very weak as you have limped away for ages then post op there is no strength but the walking is good and strengthening exercises will help. I am 8 months on and the improvements are there amazing when you look back.
Well done but gently does it
Best wishes julie
Dear Jean
We'll done but I think from what you are saying that you need to build your muscles before going to one crutch.
Actually I honestly believe that it is best to continue with two until you are able to walk without any aids. That will mean that you are walking in a really balanced way with a good gait.
Cheers. Richard
Congratulations for getting out to walk, I too am 7 weeks post op and have the same weakness when trying to walk up hills at the park...I do find that if I can sit on the park bench for a bit..my muscles recover enough to keep going...Good luck to you, Kelly
Jean,
It DOES get better, now 18 months or so post revision, I have just moved 2 tons of timber 250 feet all by myself just using a hand-cart . There is no way I could have done that 2 years ago.
I think I have now tested my new THR out really well, and even though it is still 'wonky', it looks like it is OK.
Keep up the physio exercises.
Best wishes
Graham
