Hip replacement

My mother went through hip prosthesis operation 3 months ago inDecember 2018. She started walking with Walker in February. From March 15 she left Walker and walks slowly. The operated area still pains a lot. For 2.5 minths, she took vitamins and calcium. Now she is just taking calcium tablets prescribed by doctor. Please, suggest why it pains a lot.

I think there must be a stress fracture that they cannot see on the X-ray or another bone chip.

Hello gautam,

after the walker I think most hip patients use a cane for some period of time to get some support for the operated hip so maybe use the cane for awhile.  At about 10 weeks there is a lot of healing still happening.  I would be making an appointment with the surgeon about this.

was she given pain medication???...... Bone surgery hurts...... almost as bad as the pre surgical bone pain.  Call the doctor and get your Mom some pain meds.......

your Mom's pain pal...... Erela

Strange but they recently discovered that calcium does nothing for mature women over 60

Who are ‘they’? As far as I am aware the combination of calcium, vitamin D, and protein is helpful for maintaining bone strength regardless of age or gender. Just taking calcium on it’s own may not be helpful; you need vitamin D as well.

Ducksoup, I think you may have got that wrong, there was something several years ago about women over sixty could get calcium build up in the heart, but was never really proved. What is important as Melody says is for people to take vitamin D with the calcium, as calcium requires vit D so it can be absorbed properly into the body.

Statistically nothing is ever proven with a .01 or .05 level of significance.

I just go with the research my wife reads, just the messenger.  She quit taking it a number of years back with no effect.

I take vit D and calcium as I am on steroids and it definitely has made a difference to me. Has your wife had a Dexascan?

Dear Ducky....... I am with your wife!!!  took Calcium for years and years..... did nothing to stop the bone deterioration at all...... nor did it improve my bone density...... but I am amazed by this discussion as Guatum doesn't really seem to want to hear any negative responses on this issue!

Hope you are going to the pool today....... it is a lovely day to get in a hot salt water pool...... oh yay!

On way to swim an hour.  Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs regarding vitamins.  I took supplements for years then quit due to overwhelming research that they did little that the good diet and regular exercise did.

Totally agree Ducksoup re supplements. If you are found to be deficient that is reasonable to take supplements, but why do people buy vitamin C for example when they are perfectly OK and all they do is pee it out and boost the suppliers coffers.

have a good swim!!!  I too am a research addict ..... I eat healthy ..... I wish I was able to get around more..... but I am counting the minutes until tomorrow when I get to go to the hydro therapy pool for those who cannot get in and out on their own........ it will be the best 1 1/2 hours for sure!

Have a beautiful week........ Erela
