Im a 46 yof who had a Left THR 4 years ago and now needs a revision to remove the cup and head due to on going pain. My right Hip is now starting to wear down and I have asked the surgeron if its possible to get them both done a the same time. Just wanting sonme information re reveion surgery recovery times etc and wether to get both done at same time . We live in New Zealand and this will be done through public system. Hoping you can help. Thanks
It is probably best to speak to your surgeon as to how bad the cup and head are and if they have done any damage. I have just had a revision from a Smith and Nephew stainless steel shell/ball and it has been hard enough to get through this one hip revision let alone thiniing about both.
I had my left THR done 12 years ago and my right THR done 10 years ago and now a revision right was done in January 2017 and I am now down to walking with the aid of one crutch. It depends on the surgery.
warm welcome to this wonderful hippies forum ...wow, New Zealand !! I am in Holland so you are on the other side of the world from me ...
I agree with Maree - it is hard to say how long recovery from revision will be, especially after 4 years of being in pain ... no wonder your other hip is wearing down fast ...
I would go with what my surgeon advises, to be honest ... he knows your history (hopefully) and your overall physical health ..
please come back and tell us more about your self and how you are getting on ...
Hi, Went to see surgeon and he said NO to both.sadly. My date is 21st June so now trying to pratice my getting in and out of bed correctly and losing thoes extra kgs that have gain due to not moving. Scared really about doing this again and then getting the next one done. This will be my 9th anaisetic in 9 years .5th on this hip!
So please if I can have some tips about doing this again.
Hi Renee. I was in the Netherlands and Belgium last month. In Amsterdam I thought I picked a bad time to give up drugs. Has to be 3,000,000 bikes there. Almost got hit several times
I will need a revision and currently have cemented implant. Like you I've heard anecdotally that it's a tougher op. to recover from. Curious to know if this is true and why so will be interested in the replies to your post.
Unfortunately there are no real tips on how to go trough these surgeries again ...
sometimes the anticipation is worse than the actual event - you know that it is coming and feel helpless and powerless - once it is done, you have your power back -
I am so sorry you have to go through it again -
What was the reason you had 4 surgeries already on this hip? is it the same surgeon?
My revision surgery was to replace a cobalt chrome shell/ball and I had bone loss. I am probably different to the normal revision from ceramic/titanium due to metal corrosion. I am 18 weeks past surgery and now on 1 crutch until I see surgeon in 2 weeks. I have nerve and tendon damage as well. Recovery is taking time but my surgeon told me to expect that. Fortunately I have just retired so time off work is no a problem.
I feel that 8 weeks will be long enough for you to have off work if you ony have 1 hip done (revision) and it will be good for you to have no more of the hip pain.
I am glad your surgeon said one hip at a time. Ask if you can have a steroid injection to aid the other hip until it is time for surgery on that one.
1st surgery was a labral tear then 1 year later the replacement. then last year he did a psoas tenden release hopeing that would help with pain and now this revision. Plus the anasetic to re located it after I disclocated it last november. Yes the same surgeon . 10 days left.
Hi, I've been researching and speaking to people recently about revisions which do seem to be more complex with a longer recovery time. But I did speak to one woman who's had 3 hip revisions and she was very positive saying they've made real advances and it's not nearly as traumatic as it used to be. Curious about the labral tear. I'm still under investigation for causes of my groin pain and might need iliopsoas tendon release op. Did that work for you and any problems with it?
Thanks for virtual hug. need it. Yes he is going for smaller cup and head. but as he said with smaller size there is more change of dislocating it. I would not want t0 go through an other disclocation.
My revision was far worse than my other two hip replacement but I had complicationd due to metal ball and metal shell fragments entering my body causing metal poisoning and corrosion of bone behind hip. I now have a plate and had bone grafting. A vascular surgeon had to cut away the pseudo tumor which was resting on a main artery prior to the orthapaedic surgeon doing his job. I now have a ceramic/titanium shell/ball which is great. I am now going further extensive physio to assist with the nerve/tendons and after 5 months am finally feeling that I am becoming human again! You said you had ceramic/titanium so will not have the issues I have had. All the best.
