Hip Revision

Two years after THR Still have pain in the groin/ hip down the thigh and over the top of the knee,Also hip feels loose.

Having hip revision in august but not shure what they are going to do as xrays look ok and no infection.Leg is shorter but not much, also the hip off set could be adjusted.

Might find out more at pre-op end off july 23rd

Hi Wack,

If you don't have any infection and the x-rays look ok, is it the pain that has led you to have a revision? Did you have MRI scans or any other investigations? I am interested as I am due a revision of my THR in October, because it is a metal-on-metal implant.

Good luck with the op, and make sure you think of lots of questions for your pre-op - though I have to say, I  only saw a nurse who went through the form with me, and she couldn't answer all of mine.

Informed consent means what it says. You have a right to know what they are planning and what the risks are. Having said that, sometimes things occur in surgery which could not be foreseen and they have to be dealt with, often while the patient is still under anaesthetic.  They should tell you about any known problems and discuss options or at least tell you what they are going to do.

If the hip is misaligned then re-aligning it involves taking out the original prosthesis and usually inserting a new one.  Revision is a bigger op and rehab often takes longer but I know two people who had early revision and very successful second ops which have lasted for a good few years.

Make a list of questions and several copies. You can then hand them to the appropriate person at pre-assessment and keep a note of the answers. This will help you when you actually go in for your op as you won't be worried about whether you remembered what they said correctly.

Good luck for the 23rd and whenever the op takes place.

To add to what Ros has said: At the pre op assesment, I don't think I saw an orthopaedic specialist. It may well be that you will need to contact the surgeon who is doing your op either directly from a number on hospital correspondence or through your GP. You really should know what is being planned and why.If a patient does not ask questions, Doctors take their cue from the patient and assume that they don't want to know much. It's your body and your life so ask the surgeon what you want to know.

Hello Wack ..

That about the pain don't sound right .I know we are all diff but I was pain free from day one after opp.Had opp pain but pain in groin and hip were gone. Then after about to months I woke up with pains in my lower back .Have been told that it's from having hip done and back is now returning to normal after years of limping because of bad hip .

Hi Jeanp

Hi Wack,

I'm on my second revision, the rehab is longer than the original replacement but the good news is that after years of leg difference I am finally on even ground!

Good luck

Hi Tech78

what did they do to you in theatre and why did you have two revisions

thanks

Leg length is always a issue with THR. Sometime lifts in shoes help.

i am doing a hip revision to. Recalled by manufacturer. Revisions are much more complicated and longer rehab than normal thr.

ihave been thru 3 & to tell u the truth One day I am totally indifferent the next I am grateful for THR CONSIDERING THE ALTERNATIVE,

it it sound like the ligament is giving u problems as it has always been a lasting painful issue for me. I did a lot OfPt for the first and second hip for treating ligaments helped a lot and the kneee issues was always undercurrent fron stress from feh abbs after surgery and arthritis.let us know what u find out in July wish u the best of luck.

Leg length issues r individual and drs use measurements on table X-ray and prothesis to comes as close as possible. Yet sometime if too far off this can set a whole trin wreck into place. Back hip knee alignment issues

i am sorry  it's so much more than normal THR. I am headed for revision soon.. Revision is way more complex than THR. LONGER REHAB bigger implants many women cannot due to small bones. I'm hoping for the best..I am sorry  that u have had to endure so much. I hope UR can get to a better place soon.

cheers

Wack,

the pain builds up over month until it's unbearable. That where I am.. It's so painful.. I can sympathize with u.

Juilette,

more than ever u r so right. There should be medical records with post op reports and follow up explaining the current issues.

also PLZ know how important it is to be UR own best advocate..

That's exactly what all my tests showed. As the pain got so bad I am unable to walk at all.

I am scheduling appts for revision due to recall of my THR in 2011. the manufacturer design is mom.. Metal fretting into the tissue and blood stream this does not show up in the very early stages on cats or bone scans. PLZ see necrosis of tissue and and bone necrosis and pseudotumors online. They r very hard to see in MRI ...I have all the tear too. I am now an invalid awaiting revision. I was active horse trainer rider. Gardener, trail hicking. Now I can't even go grocery shopping.

taking one day at a time.confused

You are so right. Over the course of a 5 day trip to Ft. Lauderdale, the pain has gotten so bad that I can no longer walk at all and I've got 5 weeks to wait until surgery. Man, I tell ya, I don't take to this being a cripple very well so I get better appreciation for your situation. I e\ven had to get help putting gas in my car but at least people were very helpful.

My situation the same as yours: they won't know what they are going to do untill they cut me open.
