Hi Gang, I am lucky enough to have slim , boyish hips (woman age 60) .

my op was 9 weeks tomorrow .

my op hip feels more pronounced than other side , not swollen . 

Is this normal ?

Hi Mary i am 8 weeks post op today and i feel the same too. I am just checking if you can bend forward to tie your shoe lace etc. Thanks

As I live alone I have to do more for myself  so use Velcro or slip on shoes . 

I am able to bend to put them and socks on , am very careful. 

Starting physio tomorrow so hope to get some reassurance .

going out without crutches now but do limp slightly after a while and still have some pain around joint and across front of thigh.

 Think I am doing ok considering I have myself and 94 year old dad to look after , but bless him he thinks he is helping me !!!!

Hi Mary, 

Everyone seems to have their own outcome on this surgery. My surgical hip is not quite as flat as the other but only I can tell, in my case, my real hip was so deteriorated it was poking out worse than it is now and making my leg shorter. l would give it some more time to heal. At about 3 months I noticed things started feeling different to me suddenly, I could feel the implant more and realized I had been swollen still internally. It takes a long time to heal.

Cant offer anything as not had my op yet but I am sure somebody else will answer soon - wish I boyish hips and I am man of 58 ha ha

I am going to remember the term 'internal swelling after surgery'not for my hip but for the rest of my body (no boyish shape here)

I thinks its perfectly normal as it takes time for the inside to recover completely.  I think mine does a little bit, but seeing as I used to balance my daughter on the opposite hip when she was little, especially when I vacuumed as she was frightened of it and screamed the place down, but stopped when I picked her up, my other hip was always more pronounced than my operated hip, so now they just about balance each other!

Thanks Barbara . Really miss looking after my one year old grand daughter . She is like a wind up toy at the moment so can't manage her on my own. .

Please all of you who have a too large prosthesis see previous postings on this... There is something wrong with SIZING.  We believe that the manufacturers only make a couple of sizes and maybe hospitals don't keep large stocks or choices fir surgeons and they have to select the nearest. 1 of them makes ONLY THREE sizes of sockets.  This is a national dusgrace, especially for us women of narrow hips and smaller hip circumference.  My pain after 18 months I am sure us because of a too huge socket fir my pelvis. Imagine the tissues having to stretched over a foreign body which is also the wrong fit. My Osteo said the hip was too forward, this is because it is globe shaped so not just too wide but too big the entire orbit. Another chiro said that it was "proud", I.e., sticking out. What a trauma to the body this is. No wonder we are fatigued. A machine engineered that way wouldn't be stable .... I rest my case....again

Gentilleschi, If you haven't seen an xray of your hip, you should ask for a copy. I get a printed copy everytime I go for my check ups. You should be able to tell if it's too big by the way it is fitted. It seems to me if it is too big, there would be a gap around the outside curve of the cup. Mine fits snuggly in the space. I have a Zimmer and they come in different parts to be fitted to the patient. I am pretty small and I don't feel like mine is too big. Mine is size 10.  Has your doctor addressed the issue with you?

Yes I've seen the X-rays Kathee, but the y don't show soft tissue. The socket/cup will fit into the space the surgeon gouges out. He cuts away flesh and bone to accommodate whatever size he's got.  I've been contemplating seeing my surgeon again as after 18 months it is a bit worse, but he did rather do a disappearing act .. I was done last thing on a Friday pm after his busy day and was left over the worst weekend of my life. He as from then n unavailable.  The other side I will certainly have done overseas and will ask to see the components, how they are sized, and the range of sizes. I'm uk btw.  Thanks K

 I know it's terribly disappointing for you. I would definately see a different doctor. One that specializes in hips.
