Holep in Hawaii?

I had a turp done a weeks ago, and the result was not what I had expected. The urologist, was able to make a nice clean removal of the median lobe, but after two weeks, wearing a catheter, I was not able to urinate, after catheter removal.  I read on the Mayo Clinic website that with the Holep procedure, after the procedure a person with weak bladder muscles, would be able to urinate.  My question is:  Do any of you know of a urologist, that can do this procedure in Hawaii?

I hope this helps Dennis.

My Turp was on May 24th. I had a similar problem not being able to void after the procedure. After they took out the operation catheter, that night I had to go to urgent care to have a catheter put back in. My problem was two fold, I had a major bladder infection and my bladder became lazy because I had a,catheter in and out since January.

Antibiotics took care of the infection and I retrained my bladder. To retrain my bladder, my urologist gave me a plug to put in the catheter line, before the urine goes into the Foley. This way my bladder got use to holding urine again and muscle voiding. When I got the urge to void I took out the plug and voided. At night time I used the Foley. This exercise went on for 30 days. Then my urologist had me self-catheter once a day in the evening, for another 30 days. At this point in time I can't "pee" like a teen, but I do have a strong stream and almost fully empty my bladder, with a few drops left. Now I'm pleased with my Turp.

I hope this helps, Denis

I believe I have the same problem that you had. Before the surgery, I had a catheter in there for around a month.  The reason for that is because my wife, was going through cancer treatments, and I had to be there for her. So I put my surgery off, to see that she was fine, health wise.  After a month of wearing the catheter, I went in for my turp.  A day later, after surgery, they tried to see if I could void, and I couldn't.  They replaced the catheter, and I went home for 12 days, and returned to see if  could void, I still couldn't.  Now 6 days later, I'm still wearing the catheter, and waiting for my uro to return from his trip.  I will see him on 8/26, to see if I can void then.  Thank you so much for your comment.  I was worried that perhaps, I might have to wear a catheter for life, but with what you had said, I might still be able to retrain my bladder. Much Mahalo, from Hawaii!!!

I too was worried I would have the catheter in the rest of my life. I had little confidence in my urologist's solution, but it worked.

Take care, Denis

Yes, I know what you mean.  My uro, wants me to take this medication while he is gone.  It supposed to constrict the bladder.  I was thinking, what a waste of time, but now that you told me your experience, I am eager to try his suggestion.  I must try to remember that they know more than me. {grin}

The reason that I was so disappointed, was that my uro told me that once the bladder muscles are weak, there's nothing that can be done to restore its elasticity and strength.  He said it's like an old sock, once the elasticity is gone, it's gone!  Mahalo,once again for your imput.  I feel there is hope again!  By the way, I'm 67years old, how old are you if you don't mind me asking?

Hi Denis.

I'm 64, been dealing with this problem since I was 45 and a high PSA of 20+. Have had 5 biopsies all negative. My chips from the operation were also negative.

I disagree with the "sock" comparison... it's a muscle that can be retrained. If the "sock" explanation was true, this thesis would put all physical therapists out of business.

I love Hawaii, I'm in SoCal, pretty nice but not like Hawaii, I'm jealous. I trust your wife is doing ok.

Take care, Denis
