Holiday...too early or not

hello everyone

I am 6 weeks post op. aged 55.  good health other than right dodgy hip related to a childhood problem.  Recovery has been good.  though I am stll using 1 crutch. which although I am happy with that and getting about well and no pain, not even paracetamol since day 10.  I do know that compared to some people that is quite slow. had some post op swelling at the knee that has just past few days cleared. so much more mobile as that was a hindrance bending the knee.  I havent tried driving. though no pressure to do so and would have to wrestle the car keys from my daughter!  my question is, I have seen a fab bargain for a week in Florida mid sept, which would be 15 weeks post surgery, hip precautions and flying restrictions are lifted 12 weeks on the 26th August, Am I being too optimistic in thinking another 9 weeks I would be fit for it.  I dont go on any terrifying rides anyway, but thinking be nice to walk round the parks with the family and chill out in the hotel if it was tiring.  Also it is a 9 hour flight. I could wear the TED stockings.  Right now, I feel good but that would be too much at 6 weeks by far, but is another 9 and a total of 15 likely to be feasible, or am I being silly!

Nothing to stop you if you want to go. I'm sure a holiday would do you good!

Enjoy

Cheers Richard

I would think you will be fine by then.  I loved that you used the word "dodgy". So Hugh Grant like!!  I am one week ahead of you and have been walking about 2 to 3 miles everyday.  Main problem might be having to stand in lines-it sounds like you want to go to DisneyWorld.  I wonder if they would give you some accommodation for your temporary disability.  Also, it will still be very hot and humid in Florida during September-plus Hurricane season.  Buy trip insurance!!!

Hi Stacey

Glad I made you laugh with my dodgy hip! . We have been that time of year twice before and it is very hot. was going to book a universal onsite hotel. which has transport to parks.

and its between school hols so from experience fairly quiet queue wise. I know insurance defiiately required just hope not too hiked pricewise. perhaps I should check that out first! I feel really coming on leaps and bounds now - pardon the pun - and you a week ahead and managing several miles is great.  thank you for your input. need decide soon as the deal wont last. almost wish I hadnt spotted it, but gives me something to do!

Hi Richard

I am sure a holiday would do good, but wondering if something closer to home and with potential for more leisurely strolls might be better.  trouble is.. I am so eager to get back to life given I have no pain. which is just miraculous.  I hope you are well yourself. you sound like you are making great progress, though I know you have your ankle next. The crutch thing looks great!

The only downside that I can see on reflection is that if something went pear shaped with your hip your surgeon is going to be a looog way away!

I glad that you took a look at the iWalk 2.0. It is really amazing to use though it is not suitable if you have bad balance.

I was really, really dreading being non weight bearing when I have my ankle revised and the iWalk 2.0 will give me the independence of being able to walk and still have the use of both hands which a pair of crutches would not.

I'm now four weeks into weight bearing and feel absolutely fine though I can tell that my body has taken a bit of a hit but then I'm 75 not 55 when I had the original hip surgery and the accident in the ambulance cannot have helped!

All the best

Richard

I know I am too eager I think. will be more deals another time. and maybe something a bit more closer to home and leisurely. Glad to hear you are feeling better.  the ambulance accident was dreadful. as if you were not fragile enough without that set back. dsigraceful really the guy didnt check beore he shot off. The Iwalk looks such a good idea but as you say need to have good balance. Delighted to hear you are coming on.  I have today bought walking poles and heading out to the garden to have a go shortly.

Do let us know how you get on with them.

Cheers Richard

hi osprey,

Great to hear how well you are doing !!!!

Yes, definitely check out the insurance, the cancellation insurance as well as the travel insurance - I have worked in Travel for 4 decades - I would advise a cancellation insurance if you decide to book the trip - you'll never know ...but please, read the whole form okay - you have a pre-existing something and anything related to your hip might not get you reimbursed ...

Heed your feelings  - and please let us know what you decide ...

big warm hug
