Home from hospital!

Hi Guys,

home from hospital after LTHR last Wednesday …generally feeling well maintaining pain relief for a while so that I can mobilise. Following physios advice on 2 crutches obviously and exercises

Can I ask what walking or other things I should be doing at this stage? how far etc trying to eat healthy of course ans drink fluids. any advice would be welcome not seeing physios for another 2 weeks
Thanks so much guys

Sandra

I would advise as you say to keep taking the pain relief so you can keep moving and doing the given leg exercises. Try to walk a little bit further each day than the day before, but dont overdo it. Progress to one crutch or a stick if easier only when you feel very comfortable (don’t struggle). I would also say don’t be in a rush to recover it does take a little time. Expect swelling to occur in the leg this is normal. Try to rest with it elevated a bit and do little foot movements to keep it supple.

Good luck!

Well done! Just do your exercises whenever you have a spare moment, use BOTH crutches until you are walking strongly and with a good well balanced gait and observe any restrictions you have given. Walking is the best physio provided it is well balanced. Good luck, Richard

congratulations on your new hip
main thing is listen to your body. dont over do it to start with. I started with 3 repeats of exercises 3 x a day on advise of physio and gradually built it up to 10 repeats 5x a day as for walking your leg will tell you when you e done too much but gradually increase it . I’ve got a tracker - got it pre OP as was concerned abt how little I was moving and it’s been invaluable. to start with I was doing abt 1000 steps a day but now it’s over 4k .I’m 8 weeks post OP. everyones different and theres no hard rule to follow. keep on with the meds so u can move.
agree soon you’ll get the swollen leg / legs and elevation is best. I didn’t have a proper height stool to start with and elevated mine on the bed on pillows which eased a bit but once I’d got a proper height stool my swelling reduced dramatically. now its just a tiny bit in my feet.
best wishes for a great recovery

Congratulations on your new hip
I can’t advise as I am still waiting for mine, watching all the advise in preparation lol.
Take it literally baby steps, no rush, I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery

BIG congrats - be good to yourself (healthy includes ice cream you know LOL)

Keep those foot pumps going and don’t worry about those bruises when they show up in a day or two they’ll be long gone before you know it.

Welcome to the club

i am 8 weeks post op stil use one crutch have found this site very helpfull be kind to yourself and listen to your body
Good luck with your new hip

After a hip op food has zero carbs, particularly chocolate!!

Too true! I also lost a load of weight after my op, not sure it was lack of alcohol but I also went off a lot of my favourite foods including curry and fish, still no great appetite for either after 9 months which is a shame as

Hi, are you in the UK? Weather is due to get really warm, next few days, if you have somebody to help, get the bloomin compression socks off for a few hours whilst you sit in the shade!! My op was last October and it was still warm after the hot summer we had, I was unbearable if I couldn’t get them off for a hour or two. Good recovery wishes x

aw guys your very kind with the advice. its so invaluable they kinda throw you outta hospital and off y go!

best wishes everyone
