Just a heads up for anyone going into ward 9 at BGH for a hip replacement. Be absolutely scrupulous about hygeine. I am still doing really well with the hip but last week developed a UTI (I get them all the time) and handed in a sample expecting the bug to be E.Coli which it always is. Gobsmacked when it came back as Pseudomonas. I was impressed with the cleaning regime on the ward but it just goes to show......
Made the mistake of googling it. GP's are ok but I'm surprised that from finding out what it was, to waiting for a second sample to conifrm the result is a full week and they don't seem at all phased despite the fact that the Consultant Microbiologist confirms the only treatment is Gentamicin IV given in hospital. I was offered Ciprofloxacin - never ever take that!
I don't want to frighten anyone but just be aware. It probably got me because my bladder is compromised from so many other infections. Don't drink the water in BGH - it's horrible and can have bugs. Take your own bottled water in.
So unless the second sample comes back clear (unlikely) I will be facing a further stay in hospital and an IV of a fierce antibiotic that can have horrible side effects.
Still - as my GP said this morning it might come back negative!!!!! Ever the optimist.
Hi Bordersgirl
I'm so sorry tohear you are going through all that and you may have to have a further stay in hospital
It wont affect me but I'm sure anyone that reads who is living in your direction will be very grateful for your heads up.
Keep us updated please and take care
Love
Eileen
Will be thinking of you!
During my stay at hospital in Toronto, I found the housekeeping/cleaning to be sooooooo disgusting, they just moved the dust around ont he floor when they mopped and the bathroom didn't see a cleaner in the 3 days I was there!
At some point during my stay the nuse did a test for some sort of bacteria, she said they were mandated to test so many people a week....just to keep tabs on infections....I guess mine was negative because I never heard anything back from them, but all the same, we tend to think of hospitals as sterile but probably further from the truth than we know.
Hi Judith, so sorry to hear you are having to go through this after all they put you through with the opiates. Because they made you so sick the infection could stem from that. I am going in to ward 9 at 7.30am on Tuesday morning, they tell me I am second on the list so hopefully I will be back in the land of the living by late afternoon. Good tip about the water, I will make sure to take plenty bottled water in with me. I hope you don't have to go back in but if you do, keep me posted and I will come looking for you as soon as I am allowed to get about under my own steam !! I'm really hoping you don't have to go back in though. Good luck and lots of love and hugs Maggie xxxxx
Thanks for that Maggie - I hope it didn't scare you - I really was just very unlucky to have a vulnerable bladder.
You'll be grand! Second on the list (same as me) isn't a long wait by the time you get organised and you will be a new woman in no time. Take care, love Judith x
You've been unlucky and have my sympathy.
But it seems unfair to name a specific hospital unless you are sure of the source of your infection?
Apparentely this bacteria has been found in pharmacies, soap dispenser caps, unopened bottle tops, properly cleaned work surfaces and bottled mineral water!!
Hope you have a speedy recovery.
Very sure. GP in complete agreement. Far too much of a coincidence. Hospital didn't seem surprised. I know it's everywhere so I would have got it before if I was routinely exposed to it as my bladder is vulnerable.
Understand your point though.
