How bad do you have to be

My husband has problems with both hips, he can only walk for 5 minutes without being in pain.

He has had x rays, his pyshio said the doctor would refer him to an O S, but he saw the doctor yesterday and she said he is not bad enough.

How bad do you have to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!! heis 64 still working and frankly it is impacting on both of our lives.

Any suggestions please

If he hasn't already done it, have a look on the internet for the Oxford Hip Score. Fill it in and if his score is low take it with him back to the doctor. It was used for me to see if I needed new hips. Now nearly 2 years after my first and 18 months after my second I don't think you could tell I'd had anything done as I walk absolutely normally. The only downside at present is going through security at airports where I get thoroughly searched every time as my new hips set the alarms off! Be a bit pushy if necessary but the score should help your cause,

Good luck!

Oh thank you, we certainly go and have a look.

I can be very pushy, but dh is a pussy cat!

Personally, I would go back to the GP and ask for a 2nd opinion. I've learned the hard way, over the past 7 years, that it pays to be proactive with this stuff.

Carol,

In America, THR is an elective surgery so if your insurance approves and a person is in that much pain it should not be a problem. Maybe your husband should get another opinion.Start fresh with someone new. Most THR are done because the pain has gotten so bad it effects the quality of the patients life. Makes sense, who would have surgery if they felt good!?  Just make sure you find a highly qualified and recommended surgeon so your husband doesn't end up with problems like most people on this site have. I am 10 wks post THR and feeling like I have my life back. I had my surgery in Pinehurst, NC (Pinehurst Surgical Clinic) and so far I do not have one complaint. It was even done as outpatient!

P.S. I hope I don't offend anyone, but I stay away from women doctors exactly because of that attitude I have found in everyone I have been to.

Good luck!

Kathee

Dear Carol, sorry to hear that your husband is suffering so. Definitely agree with the others who wrote, get another opinion, if it is at all possible.  I did that when I was told I would need a spinal fusion, two agreed with the diagnosis, one doctor outside the system said, my back was not the problem, it is my hip that is the issue and so now waiting to get that done. I do hope you can somehow navigate your system where you live and get the care and surgery your husband needs sooner than later!! Good luck. Maybe there is a patient representative or some other advocate to help you. Take care and the best to you both! Jody

Pardon the pun but tell your husband to put his foot down with his doctor, by the time he gets in he may be retired!

Thanks Elaine

it would seem this is the road we may need to go down.

score on Oxford was 20 so will print that off for him to take.

he has had surgery on his hand this year and I just wonder if he is proving to expensive! But he has paid into the NHS for nearly 50 years and he  needs quality of life!

We are in the uk so different here, but thank you for your reply.

Good luck with your surgery Jody, we will certainly keep trying.

Quite right Miles, I like the pun! But agree with you!

Thanks, Carol, keep us posted on how it turns out for you on your end! Hope something opens up so that your husband can receive the help he needs, happy holidays, Jody
