2weeks now after TKR. Pain is constant I am wondering if I am pushing myself too hard on walking. Today I walked into town and back, about 3k . Have been building up. Is this average or do I need to up or down the distance.

Well I certainly wasn't walking anything like that distance at 2 weeks.
If you are on strong pain meds and still in constant pain, I would ease up a bit.
Can you ask your physio? If you are pushing yourself too hard it could be why you can't sleep. Don't fall into the guilt trap, you need to heal.
Caz
OMG I can't walk that far at nearly 19 weeks!
That is a LOT of walking at 2 weeks post op! I think you are over doing ( my personal opinion) but if you can do it and are not suffering for it afterwards, then good for you!!!!
Man, that is amazing though, I have to say
I would take it a little bit easy. If you are in severe pain after the walk, you are over doing it. You are doing more than rebuilding tissue, you are giving the bone a severe beating. If you have ever broken a limb you know bone heals slower than muscle. At least give it a chance to heal.
Thanks guys I thought this might be the case. Didn't have any guide lines to whether I was be highly motivated or unwisely pushy.
have the physio today. Really not looking forward to it. As my bend is not good. And it's staples out today. My wound is quite wobbly and I wonder if it's because I lost a lot of weight and had quite a lot of excess skin around the knee area. Hope that's not a hinderence to staples out. Be glad when today's over
Hi Betty think I might have to reduce and be patient . See what they say today
Good luck, let us know how you go.
Caz
Thanks Caz . Will ask them today. Just not very good at sitting still. Want to get out and about but could be why I can't sleep
Wise words will try and settle down and be sensible
Will do Caz. Physio and staple out at about 1 pm today
This made me smile
So that's 9pm here, I will think of you.
My sister-in -law is having her second TKR tomorrow in Croydon.
Caz
Thank you Caz where are you based.
hope your sister-in-law's operation goes well. I wonder I'd a second TKR is any easier. When did she have her first one?
Sorry should 'if' not 'I'd'
Wow, I'm 3 weeks post op (1 full week in hospital). I have been out and about but I think you might be overdoing it. I am 48 and very driven to get my full range with my new knee (that I have not had for years due to injury). You have to allow all the soft tissue to heal and the swelling to come down. I had a complete hip replacement just over 3 months ago and over did my recovery with that one. Now with my complete knee replacement (same side) I will not over do it. I have come to realize this new knee will take time. You have to push yourself but not too much where the swelling will then prohibit you from PT. You have to listen to your body which I have to always train myself to do so I don't set myself back.
Wow Heidi you have been through a lot. Thank you for the advice. I'm 54 so still relatively youngish I think after chatting today on this forum it's time to have a rethink. My mum was pushing me a bit to get out and about so I didn't feel sorry for myself. Luckily I have finished my christmas shopping so maybe it's time to sort myself out.
Hope your recovery is going well are you having the other side done as well?
I am from Stanmore, Middlesex. We emigrated to Australia in 1989. I live in Perth Western Australia.
my sister-in-law had her first TKR done two and a half years ago. She didn't seem to have a very bad experience. I have been talking to her since mine and she can't remember the crying or the tight band feeling, or the painful nights. I hope this one is as successful for her.
She says that you always know in the back of your mind that you don't have your natural knee joint.
Caz 10 weeks post TKR Australia
In a lot of things your mums advice is good, but with this operation not so much.
You have had major surgery, and your body has had trauma. My doctor says, when you don't think you are doing enough, look at your knee and think JACKHAMMER.
In this case, it's time to feel sorry for yourself.
Caz -I'm 65
Hi!
I'm 58 and was told by my physio to potter about the house for the first two weeks and then start walking outdoors building a daily walk up gradually to 20 minutes a day. At 6 weeks tomorrow I have only just made it as far as you by using two sticks! Try to listen to your body because if I try to do too much I "pay for it" for a day or so, as I feel awful and my knee swells up and is very painful too! This TKR business is a long haul and from what I gather from my physio I'll need to be patient for a good 6 to 12 months!
Good luck with those staples!
I am 10 and 6 weeks after two TKR when I was 8 and 4 I decided I would push myself and started walking more. I told my physio I had walked 2 km and he had a fit. said it was too much. I ignored that and kept walking. Did 4.4 the other day, but was sore and tired afterwords. Had an appt with surgeon and told him I'd walked 4.4 km. He raised his eyebrows and said that's rather a long way but I am happy for you to do that. I had to rest the next day and then did 3km uphill. That was yesterday. I have been totally knackered today. not really sore just exhausted and grumpy. So I am going to do 2 km walks on the flat twice a day for a while.I really want to get fit to go back to work but it can't be rushed. i am 57 and overweight.
