I am one week after my op and I am taking 2 co-codamol every six hours.
In a couple of days these pills are going to be finished...does it mean that I'll have to cope without painkillers? Can I take paracetamol?

I had 2 weeks worth of 6 a day paracetmol....didn't need any more ...only the occasional one if I overdid it!
Hi briskwalk
Ask your GP for more if you think you will need them. That is what I had to do when I ran out of asprin.
Hi Brisk,
I got myself of the painkillers in the second week, but mostly because I don't like the muddled signals I get from them where pain is concerned.
I don't emjoy pain at all, but it is to me a healthier alarm than when I'm taking painkillers. I didn't go cold turkey though, just halved the dose for a few days and eventually just stopped.
Now I take them only before bed when I've had a day where I did a little more than average and the muscles bother me. Other than that, I'm off them since about two weeks. And I was taking a mix of paracetamol and ibuprofen.
Some of us still need them a while longer.Maybe it would be good to have them on hand just in case you need them you will have them handy.lol
Get in contact with your GP surgery. They will have had discharge letter and will prescribe painkillers. Were you on any before the op that you could use if required, my discharge said patient will use own cocodomol, which was the painkiller I had been using pre op. As they were on repeat prescription I just got some ordered. Did not need them after 10 days though apart from recently when I have walked too far, and then only one.
Co condo oil is a based on paracetamol
You can get more from your own doctor - hospitals only seem to give out a short supply. I started on 2 paracetamol alongside to codeine 30mg 4 times a day. Both ran out quickly - I buy the paracetamol from the shop as it's so cheap but got a supply of the codeine from my docs as it's prescription only. I also had to get some lansaprazole from the doc as the hospital didn't give me enough to go with the dispersible aspirin.
I gradually cut down on the painkillers - generally now I take paracetamol and a codeine at night or 2 cocodamol which have less codeine. I only take more if I have done a lot in the day and my hip aches- I don't see the point in hurting when you don't have to. I've just turned 6 weeks. I have taken painkillers if I wake in the night but not the last few days - I must be getting better! I'm hoping taht it will be even better when I can sleep on my side. the codeine have the benefit of making me a bit sleepy so I get to sleep on my back easier.
I may have a low pain threshold - some people seem to be able to ditch the pain killers quickly!
The prescption I was given at the time of release from the hospital after 2 days was for a 30 day supply . Asked for 1 refil. This also lasted me thru Thearpy 6 weeks later. Take it slow & be mindful of your movements and exercises.
Everyone is different as every thr surgery is. Do take pain meds as prescribed. If you are in pain ask for a refil. It's up to you and your doctor. What is best is designed by age, movement, type of thr and recovery time with therapy.
Good luck. I know it's rough for a few months 8-12. I had to remind myself that the bones were cut and joint removed. This is major surgery and it takes time for the bone to grow around the implant for stability. Follow all the protocols for recovery, movement restrictions etc.
It does go by fast... At the time the pain takes a toll, it seems to last forever.
There is a beautiful light by the end of the tunnel....no bone on bone pain and mobility! Many healing blessings sent your way!
HOPE
i was sent home with 5 days supply of morphine and a box of paracetamol - i never had to take a paracetamol as pain was not unbearable and i dont like being on pain killers too much
Painkillers are your friend, not your enemy. Your body is more relaxed when it is not fighting pain and stress. It helps ease your movements and get excercise going. I was prescribed painkillers including paracetamol and ibuprofen for 2 weeks and then bought them myself across the counter, gradually reducing them after 4 weeks. This is major surgery we are talking about and the medication is not addictive. Be good to yourself😊
i was really fortunate in my recovery pre op i was popping the pills - believe me if i needed them i would have taken them!!!!!
Just ask for Tramodol or Co Drydramol they work so much better...Ian.
I had tramodol in hospital and it worked very well for me but I do know that some people didn't react to it very well, just as some people didn't get on with codeine.
Best to have something that you know you don't react to.
Hi I still take painkillers from time to time!! I am 12weeks just gone and still stiff! It have other issues! Being a carer for hubby too! Anyway good luck to you! Regards Amanda
