Hi all I'm l3 weeks post TKR and still taking 8 co codamol and 2 ibrufen each day but I rearly want to go on holiday middle of July it's not so much the pain it's the tightness it's there constantly don't even know if I should be taking them as they are only taking the slightest edge of it. I'm still icing my knee and elevating and my meds say not to drink while taking co codamol some holiday this will be its the only time i relax and have a drink has anyone stopped taking there medication after 13 weeks
I stopped my cocodamol on the second day
) But the thing is, do you need it for pain. If you don't need it for pain then don't take it. I doubt it does anything for tightness. In the days when I was given it for arthritis I found it didn't really do anything anyway, so you MIGHT find there's no difference. How lovely to look forward to a holiday!!!!:-))))) Enjoy it:-))))
I am 14 weeks out and occasionally need a tramadol for pain but only 1-2 a day. I don't like taking meds but it helps. I had the oxy-condone for the first two weeks then hydro-condone for about 3 more weeks. I should be pain free by now (one would think) as some of you folks are doing so much better than I. I had manipulation a month ago. I just want my old self back. Good luck everyone!
Karen, the pain varies hugely from person to person. If you've got pain then take something for it! You'll get there:-))))
Eileen,
I am one year out and knee been swelling . Guess I'm over doing it so I am back taking the ibuprofen. Don't think it ever is " normal" again . You take when you need I would say . I stopped initially at around 8 weeks I believe.

13 weeks is still very tender and sore remember you had a very horrific op and very intrusive so if you are in pain use your meds i used it up to my 2nd a year after and are now weaning myself after 7 months my docter said i can have a drink but not to empty the bottle every tome a beer now and then supose is ok i will tell you that some of the meds i am on are more severe tha a drink or two in my opinion only but 2 knees in 3 years and yay i am happy and walking so on with my weaning of painkillers how long i do not know lol regards danie 61
Post TKR 4 months, Stopped taking meds after 2 weeks. However, doing my exercises every day and have double the amount of reps. Started playing golf a month ago with buggy but have started walking, got to 16 holes walking.
No real pain, have slight swelling after playing golf but then ice and exercise.
Key is, exercise, ice, more exercise, more ice.
I would gradually start dispensing of them. Tightness doesn't merit pain relievers surely? Its up to you in th e end. You cou
I am sure the manipulation would aggravate all the tissues again so wouldn't expect to be pain free because of that maybe?
I am having a very hard time getting my husband off the couch to exercise or walk. His ankle swelling is so bad, it effects all his ability for improvement.
I need to get back in touch with his doctor. He is five weeks out, and this is not normal.
Always seen tightness as scar tissue. Quit pain meds at 3wks except for 1 tab at night for 2wks then ibuprofen as needed- usually 2x a day. Not on anything, regular, for months. Maybe 400mg ibuprofen 3x a week. I keep doing exercises everday to....its up to you. Is it real? Or fear?
Good luck
Eileen88018; I still take something for pain, mostly at night and before therapy. I have RA so I will probably have some pain for a while I am 13 weeks po. I am trying not to take a lot of pain meds but sometimes I have to take 1 or 2 a day. 1 in the morning before therapy and 1 at nighttime. So I say if you need to take pain meds do so. Everyone's pain level is different. My RA is so bad but I just force myself to do without most of the time. Sometimes they don't help much anyway. If your pain is not really bad during your holiday; please have fun. We deserve some kind of enjoyment after this surgery.
Thank you Chris done without meds all day and your right it doesn't help the tightness so fingers crossed
Thank you for reply Danie I'll keep in mind what you said gosh hope I never have to have my other knee done couldn't handle it lol
Gosh your lucky I do a lot of walking and I ice a lot but I'm in pain mainly severe stiffness
Try some Voltaren Gel (RX in the US). Second best topical anti-inflammatory on the planet. Helped me a lot for years with bursitis and then the knee. Great 15-minutes before bedtime.
Please check alcohol interactions with your meds!!!! Very important.
What is the best Gel Chico?
Thank you...no one EVER asks...
It's called "lotion"...that's it...just "lotion". In the US, it is only made by certain specialists in certain states using certain locally grown "ingredients" and available in dispensaries in those certain states for only those people in those certain states who have a certain special "medical" card. Yes, the "lotion" is green in color and smells rather "earthy". However, it relieves pain IN FIVE MINUTES!!!!! It is the absolute BEST stuff I've ever tried. Rub it on...done. No eating or inhaling involved. I would imagine other countries have less restrictive attitudes towards the "lotion". Here, we have to deal with political idiots straight out of the 18th century...
Good!:-))))))
Thank you Chico all your posts have helped me so much
