How long before flying

Hi

At the end of May I was put on waiting list to  have right hip replaced  with an expected 6 - 10 week wait.

We hoped we would be fine to fly to Tenerife in mid October with apartment booked.

However I have just discovered that it is at least mid September before operation and they will only give an actual date about three weks before.

Am I right in thinking I should wait three months before flying and therefore should cancel booking?

Norman

Hi Norman

It sounds like you will still be recovering and although you'd be best talking to your surgeon/consultant, your holiday will be too soon after surgery (if 4 weeks or less).

Thanks for that Neil. Yes other inquiries have led us to think three months is advisable to be on the safe side.

With that in mind I have contacted the apartment owner with apologies.

We had also booked for next March so will look forward to that.

Ho hum. Good to be a part of the forum I have been followinbg for a wee while

Norman

The difficulty is - it's not that easy to predict how your recovery will go and how you'll feel.... you may be super-quick to be back on your feet, and heal really quickly.  On the other hand, you may find that you need a more gradual step-by-step, little by little approach.  Sitting in a cramped plane may not be ideal/easy.

I think the 3 month thing is advice that applies in particular to long haul, rather than short haul.... but you'd need to be taking anti-DVT precautions for any trip.

Yes. I realise that DVT is something to be wary of and perhaps it would be unwise to take chances.

So probably caution is the best imperative

Hi Norman

I think the short haul flights which are allowed sooner are European - not sure that it  includes the Canaries.

Recent research suggesting that more post operative DVTs occuring triggered by flying than previously thought so its worth considering risks/benefits. I am almost 4 weeks and have just declined a 3 hour drive to the Lake District. I want my own comfy bed for now and to be up for everything I want to do on holiday. My in laws found by trial and error that hotels in Tenerife can be hard going - long walks up and down, inaccessible pools for recent hip replacements and from some places walks into town were too arduous. So it also depends on where you are staying. If you do want to go then why not  to get a cancellation operation slot?

Good luck

Chris

Hi Norman, well I also think that 4 weeks after your opp. may be too soon, but having said that everyone heals at a different rate, you may feel up to it, but i would take the advice of your surgeon, as tenerife is around a 5 hour flight, and unless you can afford business or first class it may be a wee bit sore when you get off, anyway good luck, hope you get your holiday, and best of luck with the thr.

Lynne.

I was due to fly to Tenerife this Sunday but cancelled it after being given an op date of 26th June I looked into the situation and decided to cancel my holiday as it is advised not to fly over 3 1/2 hours until after 3 months. Not worth the risk if you ask me and have moved my holiday to October which is over 3 months and decided not to fly over 3 hours and will also using flight socks to reduce the risk of DVT.

Hi 'nezi'

which part of Tenerife are you going to?

Costa adeje but not going until November and its salou on October.

Great. Adeje's a nice area.

We've stayed in Los Gigantes and Los Christianos but last year went to Golf del Sur even though we don't golf. The view over the golf course is very nice though.

We hire a car and enjoy trips up north.

Ah well - we'll be out there next March.

This will be my first time in Adeje as we usually stay in PDLA near the Safari Centre which i find to be a nice area with plenty to do, really love Tenerife and been about 10 times since my 1st visit with the lads 20 years ago although my holidays are very different these days to that 1st visit, now a heated pool with good kids entertainment compared to a cool nighhtclub with cheap cerveza.
