Hi All
i know this question will have been asked before but I just can't find it using the search facility - so here goes.
How long (approximately) is it after a THR can you / are you allowed to fly?
My operation is 9th November 2015 and I am due to fly long haul (8 / 9 hrs) on 23rd Febrauary 2016 - all being well is that long enough?
Best to ask consultant at your 6 weeks review. I want to do a 50 min flight at 7 weeks post op and I'm hoping to have my review before this so I can ask if okay.
You need to check with airline as all differ but surgeon's advice is 3 months.
Hi Dave,
Please look up am6t8 latest post - I think he is 7 weeks post-op and vacationing in Bali as we write ...
at 13-14 weeks you will probably be okay - and always get clearance from your surgeon ..
When you buy your ticket, take out cancellation insurance ...unless you buy a non-restricted ticket ... like business or first class ....
have a wonderful weekend
where are you planning to go ??
Hi Dave, I asked the same question on this forum but didn't get a definitive answer as surgeons advice varies from area to area. I wanted to fly to LA for a Chritsmas cruise as I was advised not to attempt crossing either the Atlantic or the Bay of Biscay in December. I hope to have my THR early October. I phoned my surgeons secretary and she said that he would advise me in due course. Not much help if you are trying to book a holiday. I should have thought given your dates that short haul is possible but long haul could be a different matter. If/when you do fly long haul I would strongly advise either Premium Economy or, if you can afford it, Club Class.
What area are you living in? I ask because I can't get a month let alone a date for my op. Again, different areas different surgeons different advice. I just look forward to getting it done and dusted and getting back to normal life hopefully without pain. Good luck to you, hope you have a very speedy recovery.
Hi Jennifer Louise
thanks - I have spent the last 43 years at sea, Nd crossing the Atlantic / Bay of Biscay in De ember is as safe and as comfortable as laying in bed now a days.
the cruise liners all have what are called stabilisers and do exactly that - stabilise the vessel - they will also alter / divert course if any bad weather is in the area.
Cruise Liners don't take people's money to make them sea sick - you will be fine on a boat
i live in Merseyside but I am paying for my operation myself hence the firm date - good luck
Im flying long haul on Oct 1st. Had posterior approach thr op on June 3rd. I've looked into this in depth and no surgeon will agree you can fly long haul under 3 months. Nor will airlines will l and insurance companies.
You will be ok as 3 months will have passed but make sure you wear flight stockings and walk around every hour.
Hi Dave,
I have not read the replies yet, but I had my operation on May 15th and am now on Bali island, two months after the operation. Do hve a talk with your GP or surgeon, as they wilk know whether or not your progress is sufficient to allow for long haul flight. Mine was 12 hours, so 9 falls welk within range. Do ask for extended leg space and bring your crutches, even if you don't really need them. Mine got us on the plane even before the business class was allowed to board 😁
😃
I'm here!
And indeed having a blast this week. Done much walking yesterday (spread over the day I walked 10 miles!) but today was visiting many places woth much very cool stuff. And temples and and and..
On a side note, Kopi Luwak is extremely nice coffee! Tad expensive though 😁
Thanks for the reply - Excellent use of your crutches !
Thanks Sue, Good Luck - post how you feel when you get there - will be most interested
Hi Renee
Thanks - I am / was planning to go to Antingua - I would be travelling Virgin Upper Class (which is what they call their business clss)
Its something that I want to book as a reward to my wife for looking after / putting up with me for 3 months after the operation
I am / she is under no illusions - I, without a shadow of doubt WILL BE like a caged tiger
Good Luck to ALL
Should be ok. But make sure to get up and walk while on the flight. And do foot pumps frequently to prevent blood clots in the lower legs.
I have found men's support socks that are a little tight on the calf and foot. They come up to the knee..I use them when I fly or take your tou trips. They feel good and they come in black.
Also keeps my legs and feet from swelling during these trips. Also international flights have very long way to walk to the gate. Enjoy.
Hi ginger
Thanks - Keep safe Good Luck
Dear daveoffshore,
I have been told I can fly short haul after three months, and long haul after six months.
Best wishes
Ella
Hi Ella, 6 months to fky long haul seems excessive. Any reason why?
Here in the UK the time is 3 months by consultants and nhs.
Thanks briskwalk - that does sound excessive, where are you based?
Keep safe
Thanks Sue
Is that from personal knowledge from surgeon or just off websites?
I thought 6 months was a bit excessive
Good luck
