how long does it take for co-amoxiclav to work on an ear infection? I have been taking it since Monday, but it does not seem to be working

I still have ear pain and a brown discharge

Hello shazbat55, If you haven't any improvement by tomorrow you should ring your surgery and let them know. As it is Bank Holiday week-end you will be stuck till Tuesday otherwise. Most anti-biotics take about 24/36 hours to really get going. You may need a different one if the infection is not responding by now.

Hope you get some relief soon.

Thanks for your reply, was thinking of going to GP again This is an on going problem, went to see a specialist a few weeks ago about intermittent earache, he said it was residue of infection I had 20 months ago, said I would have to deal with the odd earache pain and not to eat beef or nuts!!!!!

Oh dear you poor thing. You definitely need to get it checked out. Hope your surgery can fit you in. We have a practice nurse when the docs are up to their eyes in patients who can prescribe anti-biotics etc. Do not let them fob you off particularly with a long standing problem as you need to get it sorted for good.

Not sure what the beef and nuts bit is about but I do know earache and infection when I've had one.

Good luck for a good outcome.

He said chewing certain foods can bring on the earache?

Well I suppose that is possible but seems a bit extreme to me. You'd have to be chewing for a long while to make your jaw ache, which I suppose could lead to earache. But then I'm not a doctor. Just someone who has had a few nasty ear infections (also my son) over the years.

Anyway the brown discharge needs addressing and sounds like the infection so best to get it checked out. You can then stop worrying and get on with better things.
