Hi all
I am in the UK and my surgeon reffered me for a THR 3 weeks ago. I have not had any letters to confirm this, only a copy of the letter which has been sent to my doctor.
How long is it usually from referral to receiving a date for the operation?
Thanks
Paula
Well it all depends on surgeon etc when I first had trouble was start of 2014 and my hip got so bad even after two steriod injections that did not work for me. After coming bac from holiday start sept, and contacted my surgeon to say how excruciating the pain was and I eventually got my hip done 27th October still having few problems, as not back work yet having private physio starting on Wednesday but am having bad sharp pains down my leg am hoping nothing bad, that do say everyone different and it can take up to six months with pain. So fingers crossed
Hi Paula, I had my referral from my doctor in the April 2014, saw the consultant / surgeon 2 weeks later agreed to go on waiting list to have right THR, Got a phone call in mid June and offered a op date of 16th July 2014 which I took. Then got a pre-op assessment 2 weeks prior to op where they take blood, urine samples – do a ECG, BP & height & weight. Need to take list of ALL medications you are taking & they also will send you forms for you to fill in prior to this assessment along with measurements of height of toilet seat, main chair (which must have arms) and bed. At assessment I also saw the physiotherapist who checked movement and how I currently walk I had my op and now 6mths on have no pain, can walk 3+ miles daily. Really glad I had the op. Any info you want to ask about please feel free to ask me. I’m 65yr and retired
Good luck
Regards Arthur
Arthur can I ask as I am 14 weeks post op and this past week have been getting really sharp stabbing pains top of hip down leg, did you get anything like this, am started some physio on Wednesday thru doctor have had xray week ago and told prosthesis ok just hoping this is a blip
Hi Paula, I think it depends upon where you are. I'm in Scotland and was referred to my consultant in November 2014 following X-rays after months of pain and poor gait. He then diagnosed that both hips needed replaced, the left being first. As per the NHS patients charter here, I would have my operation within 12 weeks of referral. I got a call advising of my ore op date for 15/1/15 then a call to confirm my date for thr. I had my op on 23/1/15.
Hi georgina, I had a the odd sharp pain in the first few weeks and occasionally over a couple of months but all gone now. I was offered hydrotherapy (heated pool ) – have to pay for this, which I think really aided my recovery you must do the exercises at home that they show you, I know it will be painful at first but it really helps to re-build the muscle. Also my phsio lady advised using bio-oil to massage into the scar, helps reducing the tension around the area.
Hope this helps.
Regards Arthur
My GP referred me to the hospital and I waited 2 weeks for an appointment with the Consultant. After that it was 5 weeks later when I had an appointment for the pre-op assessment and then 3 weeks later I had the THR, so it was 8 weeks from when I first saw the Consultant. However it all depends what area you live in. I am in Devon and there is not such a long waiting list as in other areas. Hope you don't have to wait too long.
Hi Paula
Usually about 3 months from seeing your consultant and him saying you need a THR you should be in the operating theatre.
Cant remember when I got the letter giving me the date.
It should be a good bit before that because there are a few things to do.
Go for a pre op assessment
Go for a group physiotherapy session
Somewhere along the way you'll be given a form to ask you height of chair, toilet etc so that they know what to organise for you when you come out after the op

Hi Paula have you found out long the waiting list is for your area? then you can roughly gage from there,if you phone the admissions dept at your hospital or contact your g.p.they should be able to give you a rough idea
I was told by my consultant it should be about 8 weeks to my op - in reality it will be 15 weeks.
Hi Paula,
Saw consultant April 23rd, offered date for op at end of August. I'm in Cornwall UK. A couple of delays meant op was not until October 14th.

Hi Georgina, thanks for the info. My surgeon has also booked me in for a steroid injection, but he said he doesn't think it will help! I hope your physio helps you out, good luck!
Hi Arthur, I'm so glad to hear your surgery has given you a new lease of life. Thanks for all the info!
Hi, Great thanks for the info, I think the waiting time is longer in England. I hope you are making a good recovery!
hi Barbara, I know each area can be different, I'm hoping I don't have to wait too long! Thanks for the info
Hi Eileen
hopefully I will hear soon, it's only been 3 weeks so I will keep watching the letter box! X
Hi Denise
that was quite quick both times, where are you in the UK?
thanks
Hi Sylvia
I've been on the NHS website and my hospital is showing a 13 week wait. I think if I haven't heard soon I might take your advice, thanks
i will bear that in mind, thanks
