How long does the pain last?

Hi my mum is 4.5 weeks post op now and is having pain that hasnt changed much she is having groin pain that varies in intensity and also pain in her buttocks operation side frequently.

She takes paracetamol for pain as she can't take stronger meds I just want to know roughly how long this pain can go on for as it's hindering her recovery as she will not walk about when she is in lots of pain which recently is everyday.

We all vary so much, and can only quote our own experiences, the only thing for sure is that it does get better eventually. I have been reasonably lucky, but groin pain intermittently as well as muscular spasms, buttocks in particular, presumably as things heal. Tell your mum to keep going, see her GP if necessary and to read this forum. There is so much support and understanding that we all feel better for being members

Hello Sumra.  Sorry your mum is in pain.  I have only started to experience this on week 7.  Today i had my follow up with surgeon and he manipulated my hip (not nice) and said all was well with good movement.  Asked about these pains and he said muscles and tendons and can go on for 6 months to a year.  Please bear in mind this was specific to me at the time of examination and may have no bearing on what your mum is going through.  I had a follow up with my GP on week 4 and asked about other aches and pains I was experiencing.  Was told it was the internal healing process and nothing to do with my actual new hip joint.  anyway my surdeon was pleased with my progress to date and told me to only do the prescribed exercises given by the hospital physio and to walk lots - preferably at 8 weeks without support unless on uneven terrain.  I can walk between 3 and 5 miles.  The groin and buttock pain is more evident once I walked a fair bit but clears up with rest

Pity mum cannot take any other pain relief

hi sumra,   I am so sorry to hear that your mother is still in so much pain ...  have you called your GP or the surgeon? she probably feels very discouraged - maybe there is another treatment, like gentle massage or apply some heat packs - of course  after discussing this with the doctor ... maybe her groin muscles are so tight and theror too painful to stretch ?  I have a lot of pain in my groin (both sides) too and have accepted it as part of the healing process - I have my follow up appointment tomorrow and will know more ...have a good night - warm hug

I'm so sorry to hear that your mom continues to have pain, I remember we chatted before. To answer your specific question, my pain really knocked down in week 4. Prior to that I was on various levels of codein & parametcal ( Tylenol). Since your mom has had pain do to not being able to take much pain medication that means she hasn't been sleeping well at all. We heal when we sleep so that has put her back. Just giving a WAG that my guess would be that she is not going to be feeling a whole lot better until week 6. Just my guess sumra. Your poor mom, I have my deepest sympathies for her. Is the pain cream helping?

The only pain reliever that worked for me is cortisone. I'm going on 10 weeks recovery and take one every now and them for that really tough pain. Another non narcotic that seemed to work very well for me at was Tramadol. Can your mom take that?

good morning sumra .... just checking in with you and your mother ... I sincerely hope that she feels better and is in less pain .... you take care of your self, okay - big hug
