How long have you suffered with anxiety and will it get better??

I had my first panic attack in April, my symptoms come and go, sometimes I feel anxious fora few days others I feel great. Will this get better? I feel like losing hope.  I am not on any medication, I know I know I should be but I feel like I dont want to depend on a pill to get me through life.

Also,

I feel anxious for no reason at times, any reason that could be

In my experience yes it does get better but only if you're willing to work at it. It took me from November til now to feel like I'm 95% better with therapy, exercise, getting a new job and changing my outlook on life. I didn't take any medication for it but everybody's different.

Before I had derealization, sob, anxiety attacks all the time, and thought i was dying. For me the key to recovering was getting to the root of my anxiety and taking steps to fix it.

Yes I am hoping to go back to therapy. I only went once (so I need to go back) I am not sure what could have caused this.Something devastating didnt happen to me to cause it, but as the therapy I went to they advised sometimes its from the past. So who knows... I am hoping to start doing things to help myself. As you stated maybe go for a walk each day, well see.

Hi there don't give up, anxiety is a problem, but if you get times when you feel good, don't easily go on tablets. It may be with some counselling you could get over the anxiety you feel. Xx

Hi Has anyone checked your thyroid hormones and antibodies?

. If not may I suggest a full screening as laid down by private blood screening companies. I am not promoting them just mentioning them as NHS refuse to do the full range of thyroid tests thus missing the correct diagnosis and causing misery for decades for a lot of people who could otherse be helped and have a decent quality of life.

Hi Desiree, I've suffered from an anxiety disorder with depression on and off for 26 years, started in my mid twenties with a big work issue, I was promoted to the office in Birmingham from Preston as the manager and felt totally overwhelmed, I lasted 2 weeks before being posted back to Preston.

Ever since then I've had a fear of relapsing and anxiety and as a consequence I'm currently on my 6th relapse, ive had remissions sometimes for years but never felt completely out of the woods, but suffice it to say with the right treatment you will get better.

Ive been to CBT therapy but never really engaged in it but have just started an 8 week course on anxiety management and am determined to get the most from it, in the mean time I'm relying on anti depressants which have always worked for me in the past.

Its a tough and demoralising illness and effects every part of your being, but you do recover and once you feel your on the mend the recovery picks up pace.

So don't dispare you will get better, as my first psychiatrist said "your not mad, your not bad and you will get better".

I do have hypothyroidism could that be a part of the anxiety also??

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement! Yes we can only live day by day hoping it gets better. I wish you nothing but the best in your journey.

Hi again

As you said that nothing devastating had happened totrigger your signs and symptoms off then that is why as someone who trained as a nurse suggested a full comprehensive thyroid screening plus anemia screening.

Drs usually rule out physicalcauses before immediately jumping to the conclusionthat this is anxiety and deprression per se.

Take care.

Hypothyroidism and anxiety.

I answered before reading that you have hypothyroidism.

YES anxiety, depression is definitely part of any thyroid disorder .

Lack of energy, slow heart rate, sluggishness, dry skin, etc are all part and parcel of hypothyroidism. Anxiety and depression are also part of hyperthyroidosm.

Are you under an endocrinologist? Sorry for the question.

There are lots of fora on the net for thyroid patients.

No I am not. I just take synthroid 125mg which I stopped about a month ago.

Hi again

I am not sufficiently knowledgeable to make a comment except to enquire if th synthroid was stopped by your dr. As I said previously there are lots of fora on the internet with much more knowledgeable people on them than myself. Take care

Anxiety can rear it's ugly head whenever it wants even if you're not feeling anxious at the time.

it can definitely be controlled but yes you do have to work at it. That includes counseling, changing any negative thinking and fearful thinking. There is a great book that teaches you all of this it's called mindfulness. Many people  have found it to be very helpful in managing their anxiety. It's a white covered book with a ball of string on the cover. Another thing is we need to change our attitude to be more positive one, stay active and eat healthy.  I found that self-pity made things worse. In other words we have to be a fighter for ourselves. Try listening to some of the audio meditations for anxiety found on YouTube. They help me a lot.

My anxiety didn't go crazy like it did from anything serious either. It was the little things and the way I was thinking plus alot of caffiene and nicotine that did it over a long period of time. My schooling and job put pressure on me as well. Also like you said it also didn't help that I stressed about the past and how my life has been and eventually one day it just built up too much and broke me. Therapy really does help even if it's just to talk to someone and remember that it can get better, you're not stuck this way. Anxiety doesn't ever really go away but it can be lessened to a comfortable extent.
