How long off work

Just wondering how long most people have off sick from work. Got signed off from the hospital for 6 weeks quite a manual job i do alot of bending and twisting which isnt going to be good for it. I know every one heals at different rates but just wanting to know an average i get paid for 6 months at full pay at least

Hi Im going back November 21st which will have been 10 wks off if that's any help I have read on here that some people have gone bck a lot earlier but it depends on each individual good luck.

Depends on what approach your having?? I had posterior, I'm 5 weeks today. Still on crutches, still in a lot of pain at times , still struggling to sleep , not signed off for driving. There's no way I'd be able to go back to work, currently not manual work 😱

Hi Dominic.

I am now 7 weeks post op I'm recovering well. My UK consultant told me 8 Weeks to drive and 8-10 to return to work.

I wasn't happy with this but now think he was spot on. My job invlolves driving and sitting for up to 2 hours in people's homes.

Don't rush it. If you get 6 months paid the take as long as you need. There are no medals for heroes.

I was signed off for three weeks.  Fortunatley, I have a job in IT where I can work from home.

Hi Dominic

I had a left THR and I'm 51. I work as a plumber and had 10 weeks off post op.

I didn't feel overly confident when I went back but you just gotta get on with it.

Don't overdo it, but I found after 10 weeks that stretching, lifting and bending was very helpful for my rehabilitation.

I'm 4.5 months now and pretty much doing everything that I could do before the op

Best of luck

Jez

Lateral coming up to 4 weeks since my op and my job is very manual make steel parts for motor industry so quite heavy at times as well

Oh i dont plan on rushing back just trying to get an idea how people have had. Quiet Labour intensive manufacturing so alot of strain.

I work has a carer it is a heavy job I have been of work 7 weeks and got a sick note for another 6 weeks I am going t go back to doctors after the six weeks t see what he says I will go back to work when I am nearly 100% I had left him replaced and have got torn ligament in left knee now to add t my problems

Twisting and bending can be an issue. That's how I dislocated my hip, but it was within the first week or so. 3 weeks later I had a hip revision. And I'm now 3 months out and my dr is still telling me no twisting!!! He has shown me how to like mop and sweep where I won't be twisting. Bending is another one, he had shown me how to bend getting things from floor. It just might be me that had this but it's worth talking to your dr and make sure since your job entails twisting and bending. Good luck and hope you have a speedy recovery!!

I had 12 weeks off and then a phased return over 4 weeks. Lab work so not very manual

Hi Sandra

Hopeyou are doing well

I had my 6 week check up with Surgeon last week  was actually nearer 8 weeks as he was off on holiday , so everything went well he was pleased with progress , Checked leg length , felt around all the bones and seemed very happy . Said I was fine to drive and to wean myelf off the crutches ( had been waling around indoors without them mostly and juust using them outside)  Said I didnt need physio , just to keep doing exrecises that I had been doing . So that gave me a bit of confidence and have been doing fine , still get wee twinges in hip and thigh , he said that as perfectly normal and was just the muscles all settling down,

Swapped the ccrutches for a stick but I used it once or twice and havent since . Was out all afteernoon on Saturday on a ferry trip and was fine ,  felt I was finally back in the land of the living!!  have med cert for another 4 weeks but would like to go back to work before that . Altho dont want to run before I can walk ! so will take my time .1st few weeks were the worst and the time dragged and I feltt i was never getting there but it comes eventually !

Hi Dominic

I ve been off since March as fractred my hip and then had to get the metalwork out , had THR in  Sept , Im 8 weeks now and thnk Ill be off for another 4 . Lke Sandra My job involve driving and going to ppls homes too so do not want to risk anything so shall take my time

oh and Iv not to see him till nxt Sept 2017 !

I had the posterior approach and was told no bending or lifting for 12 weeks.  i deliver the mail in the USA, so I have a fair amount of bending & lifting.

I returned to work at the 12 week mark & returned to my sporting activities at the same time.

I  didnt have enough sick leave or vacation time but it didnt matter, I wasnt going back early.  My hip/life is obviously more important than work !

Good Luck

Hi Jan

Pleased to hear recovery is going well. I see consultant next week and hopefully he will let me drive and return to work.

I'm good apart from stiffness when I first stand up and a bit of an ache at the very top of femur bone. Probably just the healing. Otherwise can do most things now.

Love and hugs xxx

I am seeing the surgeon soon and it will be 6 weeks ... Had a sick

Note for 6 weeks . Intend to do maybe two hours a day phased return in an office job maybe early December which will make it about 8 weeks off total I was told about 6-8 weeks non Manual and about 10-12 manual job . Mind you will see how I go ...

With a very manual job like yours, plus the bending and twisting, I would think 12 weeks would be a minimum amount of time off. Doing heavy work before that time, you could easily damage your bone healing, and do soft tissue damage, which can cause a lot of pain and take a long time to recover from. The longer you can take off, the better, when returning to such difficult work.

Hi I had a lateral THR on July 21st. I thought I was going back to work Nov 1 which would of been around 3 month mark. Much to my surprise he said I misunderstood him and said I would be off 6 months. Then I will do a gradual return to work over 2 months. As much as I think I am doing great I appreciate this time to get myself fully healed.

I think you should take as much off as you can . A good physiotherapist is a must X you need to build up all the muscles correctly to protect your new hip . Dislocation doesn't bare thinking about 😳. You need to be 100% if your going back to a physical job X
