How long post op before I should resume looking after my grandaughter

Hi fellow hippies,

Some may know from a previous post that I am due to have my op on Friday.

It just made me think (as I look after my 20 month old grandaughter every Tuesday), how long do others that have had their ops think I should leave it before resuming my grandma duties !!!  I know I will have to be careful, no twisting, etc., but she is still in nappies and is a wriggler when changing her.  Apart from that she is very good and normally is fairly quiet.

Would appreciate others opinions please ???

Thanks

Nadine

Hi Nadine, I am 11 weeks post op this week and have two gorgeous grand daughters ,the youngest is 13 months not walking just yet , I am desperate to start looking after her again but am not ready yet .

you know how heavy she is and busy .

i tried kneeling on the floor yesterday and found it very difficult.

perhaos you could try half day to start?

Mary

Hi It would be about 3 months at the least. You have to regain your strength and also watch how you bend. It will take some time before you can look after yourself, a good few weeks. I looked after my grandson who was 1 at the time about 5 months post op. I have him 3 times a week. He is 2 now and active it is challenging for me but he keeps me smiling. Make sure you feel fully recovered. Look after her for a few test runs of a couple of hours to see if you are ready. Good luck.

Hi Mary, thanks for your reply.  I was planning on around 9 weeks but may for the first 2 weeks get my daughter in law to bring her to my house, so that my partner is here aswell ???  Its just that they are into everything at that age aren't they and so just a bit worried in case I need to move fast to stop her hurting herself and end up hurting myself lol   I look after her from 9 am to 3pm so not a full day but its been taking its toll especially when I take her to playgroup (all those small chairs, etc).

Hope you are able to look after your grandaughters soon xxx

Love

Nadine

So do I , that's exactly what I am worried about .

good luck

Hi Nadine, I have a two year old grandson whom I look after (on Tusdays too!) but was not really able to for the first six weeks. Even now I have to be careful (9 weeks post op) as he loves clambering all over me and scar is still slightly tender if he catches it wrong. Also I was still really tired and didn't want to risk nodding off!  Felt awful letting my daughter down but she completely understood.  I would see how your recovery goes.  Also are you with her by yourself!  Good luck with surgery x

Sorry just need to add, still haven't had him as my daughter been off work as he has had operation, so next Tuesday will be first time.  I also have my husband so not too bad x

Hi Linda

I drive through to their house arriving around 8.30 am and look after her on my own until about 3.30pm.  I normally take her to playgroup in the afternoon which is from 1.30pm until 3.00pm if its open.  Yes I do look after her on my own but was thinking the first couple of times my daughter in law should bring her to my house as my partner will be here aswell, just in case.  At 20 months old she is all over the place and only sits still when Peppa Pig is on !!! lol bless her.

Thank you for your support ... feeling anxious today as going in at 6.30 Friday morning for my op !!!  Thank goodness for this group.

Glad to hear you are getting on OK at 9 weeks post op x

Good luck for Friday. Try not to worry, thinking about it is worse than actually going through it. I was a jibbering wreck before but honestly it was fine. I doubt you will be able to drive for 6 weeks so your daughter in law would have to bring her to you.  I told my daughter I would have to see how I felt and how recovery went. you will know when you feel able to look after her

Let us know how you get on xxxxx
