How long will a THR last?

I had THR 2005 with a titanium implant so my bionic hip is now 13 years old. I’m curious as to how long everyone was  told the life expectancy of their replacement would be?  Those of you out there who have had a second replacement how long did your first last and how did you know you needed another?

Thanks!

My surgeon told me about 20 yrs.or so..I had the Anterior for both hips.

Hi.

I had my first the in 1988. Still absolutely fine regarding mobility. No pain ever. Ridden horses all my life. Two natural births.

About to lose it due to a suspected infection. Scans are showing bone density issues so possibly it should have been replaced sooner.

Encouraging.  I do wish you good thoughts on your new hip.  Will you be using titanium?

No idea yet. Concrete spacer will be going in this month. I'll be guided by my surgeon. He's a good guy and knows his way around complex hips.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I think I was told 20 to 30 years for my Ceramic/Titanium hip ...

but was also told it depends on my weight and how active I am.

Mine may be further affected by the misalignment of the ceramic socket.

So stay slim and don't run too many marathons.

Mine lasted for twenty years if very heavy work with lots of twisting into confined roof spaces, trenches etc. Titanium and poly cup. Replaced ball and poly cup last year. Both done posterior easy quick recoveries.

Almost no running or jumping down.

Hope that helps.

Richard

I was 34 when I had bilateral hip replacements (I am 38 now) and was told that 15-20 is what I should expect out of my titanium hips. I will say he told me depending on my activities it could be sooner.

Hi, Am halfway through having my 1989 hips replaced mainly due to them breaking up and damaging my pelvis, my advise, don't ignore severe or long lasting pain!!

Hi, Well I’m halfway through having my 1989 hips replaced, mainly due to them breaking up and severely damaging my pelvis ( being reconstructed ) my advice would be don’t ignore severe and/or long lasting pain, good luck, T

My surgeon said 20 years. But a friend’s surgeon said “we say 20 years but really we think it may be nearer 30 now”.

Hi Skippygolunks,

delightful name!

and greetings from Exeter.....

I was encouraged by this correspondance - my birmingham titanium resurfacing of left hip was 2002; and THR of right hip by Exeter Hip was 2016.

all well so far! My only restraint was bungee jumping. i'm aregular runner and gym user and rampbler, so keep touching wood!

Assuming a good job was done and your bones are in good condition and that your life style is reasonable I would expect between 20-30 years.

Cheers Richard

It's heartening to see some hips are lasting some 30 years and thanks to the posters giving these results.

mic71403, Is there any reason you went for a Exeter instead of another resurfacing.

I’m guessing your replacements were due to wear and tear from activities?  Mine was due to incomplete socket and ball deformity.  I am in no hurry to go thru it again!

Hi Breeze,

Very pragmatic!

Resurfacing was and is great, but now living in Exeter.....not Oxford which is a centre for titanium resurface op.

Exeter THR is light, well evaluated, and is one of the best THR  and is local and I went for it!

Best
