I have seen it many times live recording on u tube and virtual. I prefer the virtual version. also docs version on his office.
So I ask before surgery what manufacturer/model, how many per year of the same model does he implant and thesuccess rate ..as well as how long the model has been in the current market.
It it helped me understand how critically important it was for the surgeon to be very familiar with the same technique and have good surgical assistants to see and hear the explanation as the surgeon proceeds.
Anyone else have any thing more to ask their surgeons before surgery?
hi hope
my surgon wont even explain what he as done when i asked him 2 weeks ago hes so arrogant, ignorant, and needs lesson's on bedside manner walks away when you ask him anything in the cubicle were he see's you as you no i told you i have had two done i managed ask him to let me see my x ray s of the last one but he told me i have titanium, colbut, metal plate and screws i also some spiral wire but he didn't give me the chance to ask for an explanation

Don't give up. U can hire an attorney to hande a case on a contingency basis. He collects at the end of UR case hearing.
Go online there r many attonry's hande long recall las suits they can give u a referal and a lot of info.
Ask ak the dr office for the Aop report all the info u Ned make model type manufacturer and labels r there.
i understand how I r struggling thru this we r struggling together.all metal hips R made with a amalgam of cobalt, chromium and titanium..
Since u r in pain they r responsible . Docs in this business of hip replacement r from one end of the like scale to the other end unlike.
mu guess is UR pain is from a loss ending of the stem . That's the usual . PLZ read recall STRYKER ABGII online to understand what u can to to get past the wall u feel stuck in. It's not a good place. Let me help u get thru. Read and watch THR ON INTERNET google on u tube virtual pocs not a real live but a animation version. Then look online at the real parts. It's like looking at a catalog for replacement parts for the frig.. This will give better understanding at what causes u pain and why.

Yes, I've watched videos and, in the cause of science, watched some in theatre. I picked my surgeon on recommendation from some people I trust and resisted the local management's system which would have sent me to another surgeon at any of the 'local' hospitals with no opportunity to discuss the technique to be used.
Did my knowledge help - yes in that it gave me the impetus to fight for what I wanted and I am very satisfied with the early outcome. No, in that I knew even more about the potential problems than they tell you about in 'consent'. My boss had two replacements and he chose the surgeon and left the rest to them, I know what implant I had and the median lifetime - of course I expect to be in the above average group, however irrational this is.
Hello Christine Your surgeon has to show you your xrays and scans ect that is the right that you have we no longer live in a world of medical mystery I myself have had hip conditions since 1950 and even in the days before enlightenment was given all details and xrays ect just ask him what he is playing at also tell him not to be so rude There is no need for bad manners Take care Peter
I watched full video of total hip replacement before my surgery
I liked the idea of knowing what's going to happen in theater to me, but i didn't like this idea when I was going in to the theater as all the scariest bits was standing in front of my eyes lol

I took the attitude, perhaps naively, that having a thr was like jumping out of an aeroplane for the first time with an instructor. I just had to trust him. Admittedly, I had seen quite a few surgeons over the years but I didn't like them. Eventually I settled on someone who I heard good things about. He then retired and I had to find another surgeon for second hip. He's very young and talks to me as an equal. In the end it's down to many factors I would not wish to know what they do in theatre. I can imagine and that's enough. I live my life for today. Today the sun is out and my life is ok. I don't live in Gaza and my family weren't on the plane to kuala Lumpur. Amen.
Hi Christine, sorry to hear you are having such a rotten time. I'm waiting for my appointment for my first THR which should be hopefully not later than September ( I need both hips done !). I had my initial appointment with my surgeon 4 weeks ago and he could not be more different than yours. The appointment lasted about an hour where he showed me my x-rays from the day and from 7 months previous. He explained the damage and talked through the operation in detail. He told me because of my age (50) that he would be using ceramic implants as they have a longer life. He talked through all the pros and cons of the operation including all the things that can go wrong. He positively encouraged me to ask questions and also said between now and my op I can make an appointment with him if I have anything to discuss. I realise now I am very lucky !!!!
have you tried contacting your hospital manager regarding your surgeon ?? For the most part they can be very good at resolving issues.
wishing you better luck for the future. xxxxx.
Ros,
u r one of the rare ones. I found very few even know what type of implant they have or researched their doc.. Most videos showing how the surgery is done in annimation is not hard to wartch as most people think
as u say its educational . The more information we know the better the results and many things we can't always control . In many cases THR surgery does give a better quality of life..
THANKX for UR reply..

All the records r if fact the patients. A release signed bt the patient is all that's required to get medical records.
i always get a copy every time I have a appt and ask for drs notes. That way ot doesn't cost as much per copy usually free.

There ya go Juliette.. Now that's good to hear take one day at a time.. Everyone is different. I am thankful my first two THR went well u just learn a few things along the way. My surgeon was very happy to go over every last detail even though a I was not totally getting thru it.. Once it's clear I digested the material and came thru it understaning why I should not move in ways to put stress on the device .
REALLY everyone has to trust their surgeon in the long run.
The sun is always shinning..

Depends where you live Hope!
It probably sounds strange but watching a really good surgeon operate is as satisfying as watching a potter - much more stressful if something not going well though but even then you can tell when the surgeon has everything under control. It really does give you a thrill when they reduce the hip and everything sort of falls into place ready for suturing. I've been lucky and most of the THRs I've seen have been with top class surgeons and my current surgeon came strongly recommended so if I have to have the other hip replaced I know where I'm planning to go!!
your last line brought tears to my eyes....bless you for thinking of these lost souls before yourself.
With that being said I'm somewhat like you....first here in Toronto it is VERY VERY hard to pick a doctor of your choice and it is hard to find out what he is really like unless you have a "in" at the hospital that will give you the scoop on him....my doctor I saw for less than 2 minutes during my initial consultation, he had no interest in what I had to say and whenI asked him something he literally rolled his eyes and said "we know what we are doing here", thank goodness my daughter was my witness as no one would believe me!!!
Also over here I will be given my IV in the OR room, so I will be seeing everything...I think I will just shut my eyes and count numbers and hopefully I won't know anything until I'm in recovery.
I look forward to your comments...you always find a way to reassure me and feel hopefull
In the ORs I've been in everything was kept under sterile towels or in sterile blister packs until wanted, the only thing you might see is the anaesthetic trolley which is clean but not sterile. Please don't think that you are going to see something like a shiny medieval torture chamber, the thing you might find a bit weird is the hoods and masks. I once met a nurse I'd only seen in theate rig out and about and neither of us recognized the other 'in clothes' so to speak.
See this is the paradox. A rude arrogant surgeon may be good at what he does. The nice feely touchy one may be incompetent. This is why we need more openness and transparency.
That is funny. U made me giggle with that one . Thank god the is laughter in the dress code for nurses. Make great Halloween costumes.
I always find UR advice reassuring and very helpfull.
we r all here to support each other every day and that unusual on there sites.mi am thankful 4 u and all my THR Pals.
