How many miles should i walk

Hi, it's nearly nine weeks since my TKR op and  i'm doing pretty good.  Still have the tight band feeling around the knee and the burning feeling but on reading the posts here thats pretty normal stuff so i'm not complaining.  Could someone let me know how many miles i should be walking.  Did just 2 miles yesterday and was exhausted and had a bit of pain in my knee later in the evening. I've seen a few different PT and they give me conflicting advice, i've learned to listen to the comments on this site as they make much more sense.

Thanks

Therese

hi therese welcome ,its not a matter how many miles you walk .to be honest walking long distances before 12mth is crazy in my book .i dont know why some people advise this .try to look at it this way you have had your bones severed metal and cement embeded into your bone ,all this will take along time to heal properly .by all means walk and every day if you feel up to it but little and often is the right way to go .remember this is a marathon not a sprint . if you did two small walks  rather than one long walk that way your giving body time to recover .also if you are sore when you return from your walk rest and ice it good luck

Hi Therese. I'm 6 months past my L TKR and 8 weeks past my R. I also have that tight band above my knee that my Dr and PT say will go away with time.

I'm afraid that I myself haven't attempted that long a walk. In fact I'm prob up to 1/2 mile. Everyone is different but if you were uncomfortable after 2 miles I would certainly back off. No need to rush things. My L knee would have handled that walk at 4 months except that my R was a wreck.

I'd wait for more replies to make a decision but I wish you continued good healing and pain free days.

Hi Linda, thanks for your reply.  To be honest the PT advised me to take long walks but as you say i think i'll stick to little and often.  Maybe if the PT ever has this op then he'd have better advice to give me. lol.

yes i agree physio not iin pain some of them have patients doing the impossibe .i was lucky with my physio she looks at the over all picture .one time she told me 80% of her patients she has to kick a** with them and 20% she has too hold up a slow down banner .     i hope you continue to recover well just keep listening to your body it will tell you  x

I was walking two kms a day (about a mile and a half?) at si weeks, and my surgeon said it was too much . . so I cut it back to about a kilimetre.  Better to walk well for comparatively short distances than to struggle for too far.  Of course, it also depends a bit on how much you were used to walking before the TKR!  I'm afraid i was very inactive before the TKR . . . .

Hi I am almost 5 weeks post op from TKR I too have that tight band round knee & burning also like toothache nagging pain on & off normally after exercises I was not told to walk any distance I just walk round the close where we live & try to keep mobile but I do get extremely tired & sometimes legs feel really heavy.
