How soon can i go to pool after anterior THR

hi all, my first post here, you guys have kept me going since my THR on 10th March, three weeks today. I am walking with a cane, but feel very stiff. I am wondering if its too soon to go to hydro pool for walking exercises? Any help much appreciated.

I asked my surgeon at my 6 week appointment if I could go swimming - breast stroke and he said 'fine, no problem'. I think so long as you don't do too much 6 weeks is ok. Main thing is, listen to your body all the time.

I must say I haven't been swimming yet and i'm 11 weeks on so I can't talk from experience.

Keep resting, Martha xox

Hi, I am intending to use our local pool for walking therapy first following advice but no swim for at least two to three weeks time. I am 4 weeks pst op and have stiffness at the top of my thigh plus some in the calf of same leg. Bit by bit. Good luck and I think you are ready for gentle hydro walking therapy in pool.

i had hydro therapy sessions for 4 weeks starting as soon as i had my staples removed so about 2 weeks....there was a chair lift into the pool so i didnt have to use the steps...it was really helpful and physio gave me an exercise sheet to use in the pool on holiday a few weeks later.....

Thanks Martha,

i was hoping i could venture before 6 weeks, thanks for the reply,

cheers x

hi Kevin,

thanks for the reply, yes i only intend gentle walking in the pool, to loosen the tightness. So at 3 weeks you reckon i could go?

hibCrissywissy,

thanks so much, that makes me feel much better. Might help me sleep a bit better. Take care and rest up xx

As long as your wound has healed properly, you can do gentle walking in the pool, but if you have to step down into it, be careful.  don't do any swimming until after the 6 weeks are up.  I went swimming at 10 weeks I think it was and am fine.  I don't do the breaststroke though as I'm not so good at that but the crawl and backstroke are okay and it feels great, no aches or pains afterwards.  Good luck

If you feel you can handle the going in and out of the pool, then I think you could be ready.

I would have thought walking in the pool would be brilliant as you would not be aggravating your hip as it would be non impact and good for the muscles - excellent idea. Try not to dive in though !!!!!!!!

Joan if you pm me your emsil address i can send you the exercise booklet for the pool..

Ok will do

If your incision is healed it may be okay, but I would ask your surgeon before going into the hydro pool.  You have to be careful about infection in the wound.

I think as long as your wound has healed you can go in the pool its just the getting there, getting changed, using Loo's etc, etc as long as you can do that, its fine but I was told by my consultant when I asked at 6 weeks don't do breastroke until 3 mths at least cos it takes that long for the muscles to attach themselves to the new prosthesis and with breastroke obviously you are extending your hip to the maximum level outwards that could dislocate.

Hi Joan, I had my first hydrotherapy session 3 weeks after my operation. As others have said I think it depends on your wound. Mine had been uncovered for a week and was completely dry.

Well everyone,

i went to Hydro pool this evening. Hubby came to help. Just spent 15 minutes walking in the water, felt fantastic, but tired quickly.

tucked up in bed now, feeling good, but a little bit sore.

thank you all so much for your replies, stay well all you lovely hippies out there 😝
