Hyperacusis or Retention

Does anyone have hyperacusis or retention on here?  I thought I had hyperacusis which is certain sound frequencies being too. loud or annoying like a vibration in the bad ear, but Ive had one specialist tell me its probably Retention and they could not help.

Does anyone else have this and what do you do to help?  I wear near plague when playing or listening to music...I am a musician as well and certain sounds and the volume of certain sounds are irritating.  Anyone who can relate much appreciated.

I can totally relate to the vibration, it’s so annoying and certainly heightens my anxiety. This has only stopped recently after being put on Amitriptyline for migraine.

I’m hoping it doesn’t come back and that you find a solution.

As for retention you should request a diuretic medication to help move the fluid from your ears. I’ve not had any prescribed but if it is a retention issue then as a health professional I would suggest this to you

I have particular difficulty with low pitch sounds which when loud actually hurt my ears (I have bilateral MD).  But then again all loud sounds and most music are very difficult for me to listen to.  This discomfort could be from fluid retention in inner ear and or from the loss of hearing in low decibel range do to MD.  I do not believe there is much we can do to eliminate the sound discomfort other than to avoid it or use good ear plugs.

I am on tetrachlorodiazide 37.5/25 for the menders but does not help....will ask ent about the ampitryline....

Bluesmann,

My affected ear is very sensitive to sound when fullness is present. I did some research on "recruitment" which is a hyper type hearing that kicks in when your brain senses that something is wrong with the sounds it is receiving. It is very irritating but doesn't hurt. Don't have a remedy, just throwing that out.

Are you on anything in conjunction with this medication or solely that?

The Amitriptyline is for migraine, which they believe may either be the root cause or is contributing to the severness of the Meniere’s. I have no conclusive diagnosis yet.

Good luck

appreciate the feedback all is welcome!!

I am on betahistine 16x2 and the water pill 37.5/25 thats it...I eat healthy no salt added no alcohol, little caffeine

Hey...

Let me know if you find out anything that helps! I have hyperacusis which was really bad with the aids and they were able to change my settings so it's not quite as bad but it's still annoying. At first I couldn't stand it, but the audiologist took the edge off I can hear high pitched sounds that my normal hearing coworkers can't hear I'll say, ' Can't you hear the way the door squeaks every time it opens and closes? ' Nobody else can hear it. I guess that's my super power now I've never been told that I have retention but I'm going to ask about it. Id like to know more... how does retention cause the hyperacusis type symptoms?

Hugs,

~Mary

my interpretation is that retention is basically hyperacusis that is caused form mennieres and has no particular cure.  if anyone knows of a better explanation please provide....hyperacusis in folks without mennieres I do believe there is an out patient surgery being done by a doc in Florida.  he told me since mine is from mennieres they won't do it.....I ask my local ent if wiping out the hearing completely in my bad ear would relieve the hyperacusis since I have little hearing anyway and he was not sure.

Hi there. This is a common symptom of hearing loss. The only thing that helps me are foam ear plugs. My hearing aid does not attenuate sound nor are they designed to do this. Retraining therapies work for my tinnitus; perhaps a similar course of treatment can be used for hyperacusis.

Hi David!

What kind of retraining therapies have you tried for tinnitus? My regular doc and the ENT and the audiologist have never mentioned any course of action for the tinnitus. Just that "your brain will adjust". So, basically, "live with it" lol My brain has adjusted over the years but still, I'd love to tone it down a little. My hearing aids did nothing to alleviate the tinnitus.

Mary

amen to that....I don't think unless you go through it you know what the tinnitus is like or the hearing fluctuations....many of these ent just toss out any old thing...id like to hear some specific trainings as well....ive heard of pink noise listen gin to that which is different from white noise.....but has anyone really had a reduction in the tinnitus or hyperacsusi or retention as some docs call is when associated with mennieres.....

Hi Mary. I participated in a year long clinical study. My hearing aid manufactured teamed up with the university hospital to try out a program of chimes to help with tinnitus. It worked for me. The study was a success as now the manufacturer has this feature in their product. Talk to you audiologist about the Zen chime product.
