Hyperthyroidism help!

Hi, I am needing help with any steps i may take in finding out what is wrong with my body and how to over come it. I am 32 years old and for the past 15 years i have suffered from nearly every symptom of Hyperthyroidism. Over the 15 years i have been to numerous doctors, Many have told me there is nothing wrong with me and to just take pain killers or antidepresents, others have looked at me like i am a hypercondriact. The most recent dr i have seen regarding my symptoms has done blood test and ultrasound on my thyroid. all tests came back negative. I again went back to my dr and explained that i cant live like this no more, im fatigued constently, i get muscle aches and headaches, my muscles are weak finding it dificult to even do house hold chores and handing clothes on the line without loosing breath. I have gained over 3 dress sizes in the span of 2 years without any food or exercise change and cant loose the weight. My family history is that my mother has been diagnosed with hechimoto thyroidistis and my grandmother also suffers from a thyroid disfunction. My dr told me he would put me on a beta blocker to help with the symptoms but it has done nothing for me and have been on the beta blocker for 2 months now. My dr told me that there is nothing that can be done until what ever is wrong with my thyroid comes to a head then steps can be taken to maintain thyroid conditions. is there anything that can be done, im sick of being so fatigued and sore all the time and i dont want to spend another 20 years with these symptoms waiting for something to actually show in my thyroid. Please can anyone help me with some answers or if anything can be done with my condition

Hello Euphee,  Sorry you are having such a hard time.  Sadly yours is a common story doctors not treating you because your tests are within the normal range.

Did they actually tell you the results?  You seem to have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism and your family history with your mother having hashimotos and your grandmother with thyroid problem.  I would go back and try and see another gp in your practice and insist on being referred to an endocrinologist.  If you get now where change your gp.  Gp's seem to know very little about this condition and just go by blood test results not the patient and their symptoms.  Obviously you are not well and you are only young.  You cannot live live like this.  Don't be fobbed off.  Try googling Thyroid UK for more information.  Perhaps you could write down a list of all your symptoms and a copy of Hypothyroid symptoms and show it to the gp.  Don't give up and don't be fobbed off.  Those on this forum will offer advice and support so please let us know how you get on.  Good luck.

Carol

Hello Euphee,

I am feeling very very sympathetic. I would say the majority people suffering from hypothyroidism had the same responses/reactions from GPs and consultants at least at some point of their life. This is why I stopped seeing them and started self-medicating.

My advice to you at the moment - do not despair! If you have thyroid problems it can be sorted! But first of all, you have to be sure that it is thyroid indeed. Sometimes some other malfunctions of our organisms can have a similar clinical picture, although, if you said your mother and grandmother had thyroid problems, then it is very likely yours are thyroid too.

What kind of blood tests you had? What are their readings/values?

Join Thyroid Patient Advocacy  - if I am not mistaken, they can provide you with a list of GPs or endoclinologists in your area who would LISTEN and help.

If you join Thyroid Support UK group on the Facebook, you will get instant help with the interpretation of your blood tests and, importantly, what to demand from your GP next time in order to diagnose you properly. Once diagnosed, the treatment should be provided and, hopefully, it will be problem-free. Good luck, you are not alone!

I was like you for 10 years & kept telling my GP I thought it was thyroid related. Like you I had antidepressants numerous painkillers & finally morphine patches, nothing helped.Ihad two operations for carpel tunnel & another for drooping eyelids, still the GP's said it was not throid .I started searching the net & bought books .found a list of symptoms a mile long & found I had most of them.Searching more I found that you can have a thyroid problem that does not show up in the blood tests that GP's in the UK do.You need more in depth ones. Read Stop The Thyroid Madness, you can get it on Amazon & although its by an American, she has had thyroid problems for years & there is lots of stuff that applies here as well. There is a good group on Facebook_ Thyroid Problems UK, Patient To Patient Support, you have to join as it's a closed group but they are friendly & there is bound to be someone who has the same problems as you ,also people who can interpret your blood results & advise whats wrong .I have gone down the road of self medicating now & feel 100% better but you need knowledge about your thyroid before you can go down that road.Don't give in there is help out there it took me 2 years to find what I needed to know & you have the benefit of short cutting that.Hope this helps you a bit,
