I am at my wits end with my hair. My hair has gradually thinned over the last 8 years and in October last year the doctor accidentally overdosed me with liothyonine and levothyroxine which made the hair loss speed up. I've since reduced my dose considerably (I was on 150 of levothyroxine and now im almost down to 37.5mg).
However, I've still noticed it's falling out and becoming more obvious and it's getting me down. I've had all the related minerals checked and they are all good within the normal ranges. Ive tried the following: have growth supplements, biotin, vitamin D, natural shampoos/ hair growth shampoos, castor oil, multivitamins, iodine supplements and nothing works at all
Can anyone advise or recommend anything that worked to reduce their hair loss? I don't know what else could help
Hi Caz! I had the same problem with hair loss when I was taking levothyroxine. Once I swtiched to a Natural Dessicated Thyroid and got my hormone levels balanced out the hair loss stopped and my hair started growing back. I'm also using a natural shampoo bar made by Lush as well as a natural conditioner from whole foods.
My hair thinned a lot and some would just fall out with the smallest touch in my early days back in 1987.
Later over a 6 month period it seemed to grow back and grow hair everywhere fast. The Thyroid does help the hair growth and T3 is needed for that.
My thought is to see a dermatologist who can see if you lost follicles in your scalp and since Dermatologists deal with skin and know of treatments available to help regrow the hair. Rogaine shampoo for women is available I believe by a prescription. Also some places have clincs for Men's hair loss but they can do plugs for women also. It does not come cheap.
Thanks for your message. Yes I know seeing hair loss specialists can be very pricey. I hadn't thought to try a dermatologist, I will look into that when I get a chance.
I've heard about various regaine products but my doctors said they don't prescribe them and can be pointless when the hair loss is caused by thyroid.
I'm doing a "keep reducing medication and see what happens" approach at the moment. I am hoping it will start growing back once I have reduced the levothyroxine some more l.
Hello Bessy - I live in the US. We have to have a prescription for NDT here. The options that are available for me the NW are Armour Thyriod, Nature Throid and WP Thyroid. If you can't get a prescription for NDT than there is a thyroid supplement called Thyro Gold that can be purchased over the internet that lots of people are having success with. I personally take Nature Throid.
