I've been on synthroid for 5 years
I've often had sleep problems but I take pills to sleep. When I don't, I can fall asleep but wake up a few hours later, and can't go back to sleep. Does any of this have to do with taking synthroid in the morning?
Has anyone else had this problem?
Hi Christi,
I have the same problem as you, go to sleep ok, but always wake up and then cant always get back off. I dont take any sleeping tablets, but i was wondering if it was due to my hypothyroidism or tablets. Unfortunately i dont have any answers, but just thought you might feel better knowing you werent on our own.

I haven't slept well for years, long before I knew I was hypothyroid. I'm only on Levothyroxine a couple of weeks now which doesn't make any difference. So no, I doubt if it is the medication, just this awful disease. Saying that, I was putting it down to menopause before.
Hello Christi
My name is Shelly and I am a nurse in the USA. I have Hashimoto's thyroid disease since 1987.
Some insomnia can be from a build up of the Thyroid hormone. The body can get too much and it swings a bit. When you take a pill you have a half-life and then the next day another pill is taken and it builds up a level. So taking it early in the morning helps.
The med can take a while to get absorbed into the blood stream and some people take it at bedtime and they sleep okay since the medication is being absorbed but you are asleep.
Now a quick fix is to try and move it to your bedtime and take it right before you sleep. Second option would be to lower the level by going down to a lower dose. This may make you undermedicated Third option is to try half of it in the morning and then the other half at bedtime. This option gives the body a chance to use up some stored thyroxine.
Hyper symptoms are insomnia, sweating, fast pulse, heart races, you feel wired up.
Thyroxine packs a punch, Hormones are very strong.
I hope this helps,
Shelly
