I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about a year ago by my new doctor (I'd just moved to a new area), as this wasn't picked up by my old doctor I do wonder how long this had gone unnoticed. I just went in for the usual MOT/new patient appointment. My main worry then was that I'd put on 2 stone and was struggling with tiredness, the usual symptoms. I was put onto 50mg of Levothyroxine a day, that's now increased to 125mg. Thing is, I've only lost about half a stone. I'm trying really hard and exercising 3 times a week, but I'm finding it so hard. I've had to pretty much buy a new wardrobe as none of my old clothes fit me any more. I feel horrible and fat.
Would increasing my dosage a bit help me to lose some weight by raising my metabolism?
Hi,
I can totally relate to how you are feeling.. I had a Hyperactive thyroid about 5 years ago which was sorted with eventually sorted with drugs but it was a long battle.. Unfortunately over last 6 months have been gaining weight, feeling so dreadfully tired, that finally went to Dr's and now have a diagnosis of underactive thyroid!!!. Knowing why you feel so dreadful is only part of it.. Tyring to reverse the weight gain and function like a normal person is totally different... Try being kind to yourself. Sleep when your body tells you to.. eat what your body wants while trying to be as naturally based as possible.. gentle exercise and personal treats like a massage or trip to the hair dressers. etc just to make you feel better. As it's not just your body but your mind that needs TLC.. Sorry to say No \"wonderful\" quick fix that I can suggest just take it slowly and talk to people, it helps just to get some recognition of what you are going through.. Before you consider upping your Meds dose chat to your Dr and get his/her advice as dosage is a personal thing and what is good for one is not necessarily good for someone else... Well done on the weight loss so far Best wishes E
Thanks, E, it's good to know I'm not alone!
I don't even know if you're allowed to up the dosage of your own accord. I've got an appointment with a new doctor next Monday. He's a friend of a friend and is apparently an expert on hypothyroidism. My current doctor just doesn't seem to have the time for my silly questions. When I was first diagnosed, he quoting all these different figures, what my T4 level is, what it should be, etc and I asked if I could write this down and he was really dismissive saying a little bit of knowledge is dangerous! This is my health we're talking about here!

Dear all. I was born with underactive thyroid. I am now 33 years of age, and I have a life long battle with wait gain. I was very lucky and I had three children. I am always cold, tired and sometimes I don;t feel like doing anything just resting.
In year 2000 I was size 22 and I have decided to go on the very strict diet and I have lost 3 stone in 3 months. It was hell but it had to be done. I was so happy with myself and full of energy and like a new person.
After having my 3 children I have now put all the weight back on and feeling very depressed about it. I have started the same very depressing diet on Monday and I have lost 5 pounds in 4 days. I am hoping to loose 3 stone minimum if I can as I am very unhappy the way I am.
I do sympathise with everyone regarding the wait problem, but nothing works for me apart from been on the diet all my life which can be very depressing.
Good luck to everyone!!
