Had yearly bloodwork done last week. I've been on Levothyroxin for 10 years. I didn't get to discuss this with my doctor yet. All these numbers were normal last year. Now my TSH is 6.18 , BUN is 25. Did not test T 3 or 4. Don't know why YET. My gfr is 70. Now , I'll spend the weekend worrying about kidney desease. Don't think my doctor looke very closely at my results. Been taking Levothyroxin 50mcg for a long time. I've read that PPIs and antacids interfere with the absorption of harmones. I've had H-Pylori this past year and left with gastritis and ulcers. So my doc prescribed PPIs and Gaviscon. Stopped the priscription PPIs a couple of monts ago but recently started taking an otc one. Was also taking Gabapentin for insomnia. Have stopped taking everything at the ment though , except 50mcg Levothyroxin. Does anyone have any experiemce with these blood work numbers ? Appreciate any response to this. Just wish this had happened on a weekday so I could get in touch with my doctors office.
Yes, it appears that your hypothyroidism has caused abnormal renal values (GFR > 90 and BUN 7-20 would be normal) as GFR decreases BUN increases. Hypothyroidism decreases renal blood flow, reduces glomerular filtration, and decreases free water clearance.
The PPIs can certainly lower thyroid hormone absorption. My advice is to talk to your doctor about taking your medication sublingually (dissolving under your tongue to increase absorption or T3 can be compounded for dermal absorption but not T4) and checking your free T4 and free T3 levels. I believe that if your doctor is prudent with increasing your thyroid hormone absorption then your renal changes will return to normal.
I stopped taking the Gabapentin 4 days ago with no side effects , yet. I only take 1mg lorazapam ( atavan ) and the thyroid med. And a bunch of vitamins. I certainly like your optimism though . Wish I could be optimistic right now. But kidney failure scares the heck out of me. Thank you for your reply
