I'm due for a hysterectomy soon and need advice if i should keep my ovaries or not ? my main concern is having to take HRT and putting weight on.
Hi Marie
Had hysterectomy on 5 May, wanted to keep my ovaries as didn't want to start the menopause before my body was ready. Asked at my pre op appointment was told that unless there was a problem with them the surgeon would leave them as they still had a job to do. They took my fallopian tubes as there is some evidence that taking them decreases the risk of ovarian cancer by 90%.
Hope this helps a bit. Good luck
Hi Claire , thank you for getting back to me. i was all for having my ovaries out at first but as time has gone by and i've done my own enquiries i came to the same conclusion as you i've been to the doctors this morning and she said they would take them out as they are no good to me so confusing. wishing you a good and speedy recovery.
Hi, my surgeon just said lets get rid of the bit thats causing all the problems which was my womb which was enlarged with fibroids. I just agreed, so have kept my ovaries and cervix, this is also a quicker recovery time apparently.
I was told that i probably had another couple of years before i entered full menopause (I'm 51) so i didn't want to bring that forward by having them removed. Had subtotal hysterectomy on 13.4.15 and start back at work this mon (15.6.15) so have had 8 lovely restful weeks off. I found the recovery really easy but others haven't as per what i've read on here.
Depends how old you are. I am 52 and had them out as Dr said nothing much left in them of any benefit and they like to do it so you can't get overran cancer. I have had not symptoms yet apart fron a bit of night sweating that I had before. You don't have to go straight on HrtT Dr and I have decided to wait and see.
I am 52 and like you had fibroids. Did you have a abdominal hysterectomy. If so can you sleep on your front now. I have been waking up every 2/3 hours do you get this?
Hi. my head is telling me to keep my ovaries. i'm 50 and i don't want to bring the menopause forward. I'm having a hysterectomy due to heavy periods and being anemic on and off since 2012. thank you for your advice, wishing you a good day at work on monday & remember to take it easy.
Hi, i had a susbtotal abdominal hysterectomy (kept ovaries and bit of cervix), consultant advised this as he said recovery is slighty easier. I have always slept on my front and i was worried about sleeping after the op.
For first 3 - 4 weeks my body literally did just sleep on 2 pillows on my back but somewhere week 4 - 5 i tried sleeping on my front and it didn't hurt so i thought yaye here we go. What i do now is go to sleep on back (never thought i would be able to say that) and then when i wake up in early hours, yes i'm waking every few hours as well, i remove one pillow and sleep for the rest (poss 3 hours) on my front, in my mind its like i'm just easing into full 8 hours on my front within next few weeks or so.
