I am 14 week pregnant and have just been put on 20 mg a day, I am worried how this will affect the baby, my friend was given it while she was pregnant and her daughter now two seems fine. There does not seem to be any research done on pregnant women and this drug. has anyone else taken it while pregnant?

It is not healthy to take antidepressants while being pregnant. See info on www.cnn.com ot www.nejm.com

Hi. I was put on Citalopram 8 weeks ago for anxiety and depression, and signed off work for a while. I'm now on 40mg a day which I take in the evening (helps lessen the grogginess the following morning if I take them in the evening). I haven't had too many side effects - mainly disturbed sleep, exhaustion, nausea and upset stomach (but I'm prone to that anyway). The disturbed sleep and exhaustion is still ongoing, but my GP says that may be due to the depression anyway.

I'm due to start IVF treatment at the end of July (only 2 weeks away!). Luckily I shouldn't need any nasty drugs for that (long story...), but I am concerned about being on Citalopram while pregnant. My GP assures me that Citalopram is safe in pregnancy unlike some other antidepressants (e.g. Prozac or Seroxat) - he looked it up in his book in front of me. He did say that a balance has to be taken between my need for antidepressants and any effect on the baby, and he has assured me it is safe. He has been very supportive of the IVF too. My IVF consultant also wasn't concerned when I told him about the Citalopram at the initial consultation. I think he would have said if he was worried.

I say raise your concerns with your GP and then go for it. Good luck with your pregnancy and enjoy your baby!
