I am 5 weeks past partial knee replacement. when should "normality" return for me?

I had thought a partial would be less invasive and create lower recovery time. I am off pain meds, able to walk without crutches or cane. I do PT 2/week and my own exercises each day. Stairs a challenge but I can do them. Daily activities a challenge, as stamina hasn't returned.

Problems? zero stamina. Can't get motivated to cook.Grocery shopping is an all day ordeal. Pain is not bad, but definitely not gone. Some nights far worse than others. I am beginning to think that I am doing rehab "wrong." Help!

Hi Retired!!

Partial or full knee replacement is tough all around.  I remember having the same "zero stamina" for at least 6-7 weeks.  Was thinking it was probably the meds, but I was mostly off them by that point.  Going to the grocery store would have me in tears because I was so wiped out.  Things really turned around for me at 8 weeks.  Back to driving, mental state greatly improved.....just all around much improved.  So give it time and continue doing what you're doing!

Hello Retired

I had a partial May 19 . I would say I didn't turn a big corner as far as energy until about 7-9 weeks. I went back to work at 5 weeks which was just to fast and set me back some. I was pretty good with pain until I went back to work . Has to start taking ibuprofen again.

I think your doing great actually . You just need more time . The energy level will come back promise .

I'm 5 months now so happy with my new knee / leg

I m told by many to just wait it out. OUR stamina will improve and tiredness will dissipate. I m always tired and it's going on 6 weeks after TKR, it :sucks but we have to believe there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi Retired,

I had a right knee, medial compartment partial done on 6 Nov 2015. I didn't rush my "process" at all and at 5 weeks was still on crutches - YES! both crutches. However it was only just about this time  that I actually began to even vaguely wanted to go out. I was selective about what I did and whose company I kept but my partner and I managed a Christmas dinner with a work mate and his wife - and I was still on both crutches. As and how I felt like it I increased my going out. However, by 8 weeks my surgeon was delighted, gave me the all clear to drive again, also throw away the crutches and I was back at work by 11 weeks - I drive buses  and at the time I was 71. Between week 8 and week 11 I took up walking along the rugged South West Coastal Path here in Cornwall UK and just made every step a winner. Just took my time ... you're not in a race, listen to your body, take your time.

Good luck.

John
