I am afraid to go to the dentist with my anxiety

So i have had problems in the past on going to the dentist, i had a cracked tooth and went to the dentist and i decided to skip the shot, when they started drilling i had a panic attack.  After the panic attack they decided to stop with the treatment and put a temporary filling on, needless to say i haven't went back to the dentist, it has been two years since I've been back.  Well i am deathly afraid to go back because i need the cracked tooth fixed and i need to have a root canal done as well.  I talked to my doctor explaining my fear to go to the dentist and he prescribed me a pill to take an hour before i get there, he told me to try the pill at home to see how it makes me feel.  But i am afraid to take the pill it is Diazepam, should i be afraid to take this pill? I am the one to never try drugs this is why its making me scared to take it, has anyone taken this pill before? How did it make you feel? I really need to get the work done Help Please and Thanks.

I so despise dentists myself!. I do use xanax for it. I hate the whole thing. And the after part too.i have tmj so i get scared with that as well.yes take the pill it will make you sleepy and calm. You will like the pill. It is a very calmin sedative. Its nice.

Valium will likely be very beneficial for you when you go to the dentist.  Also, don't skip the shot! (Unless you have some kind of allergy or other condition that prevents you from having novacaine). They do have dentists that specialize in fearful patients.  My dentist has this system for giving shots that is perfect for people like us, it uses a very small needle that itself emits a drips of numbing agent onto the skin, prior to piercing it, so you don't even feel any pain.  But either way, Valium is safe and it will definitely give you better dental experience.  There are virtually no risks involved with this medication unless you take way more than perscribed.
