But the waiting list to see a consultant in my area is11 months at least!! Then if I require surgery - which I will - I will then have to go on another waiting list, probably another long wait. It is quite uncomfortable, especially if I have been walking/ hoovering etc. apart from pelvic floor exercises, is there anything I can do to alleviate my symptoms during the next year before I see the consultant.
Hi Celia. That's a hell of a wait. You could try a pessary; either one fitted by the NHS or a large tampon like lilets. The Tampax ones are rather long. It depends on the kind of prolapse you have i.e. is it the bowel pushing the vagina down or the bladder ? In any case, the pessaries have to be fitted by a specialist so not much help. I'm surprised at the wait time.... have you thought about seeing a consultant privately for at least a proper diagnosis.... it costs about 180. There are targets now for wait times... does you area have a 'choose and book' system. This allows you ,if you are healthy and straightforward, to get through quite quickly. By the way, I wouldn't bother to buy the pessaries advertised: i wasted an awful lot of money on things that were all the wrong size.. some the size of footballs. No idea who they were designed for. Before any operation, they recommend localised oestrogen for the vagina... you should speak to your GP and you should demand quicker treatment even if you have to exaggerate your symptons. The operation is straightforward.
Hi celia49, I have had a prolapse for the last 8 months and have had good results taking vaginal oestrogen. Need a script from the doctor.
Yes, will ask my GP - if I can get an appointment!!!
Hi elsae
Was wondering abot tampons - will give them a try. Have to wait to see the consultant before they will direct me to the Women's Health clinic to have a pessary IF I have a long wait for surgery. Been told that I will be wasting my money seeing someone privately as I will still go on the list for surgery. No choose and book system in Wales unfortunately. Will ask GP for the oestrogen. Will def need surgery.
thanks for your helpful suggestions.
I know what you mean about seeing the GP!
Celia, there are also special knickers you can buy. I got mine from a department store, cost me $A42.00. It's like wearing a straight jacket. But they support everything and hold things in place. Something you could try while you're on the waiting list. 😀
