I am concehave bad toothache after a hip replacement

I am 12 weeks post op and have developed toothache..I heard/read that this can be bad news incase infection spreads.  I have made an emergency dental appoint for tomorrow but cannot take the usual antibiotics that dentists prescribe as face swells!  Hoping for some nice reassuring posts.  and that toothache on its own is not cause for concern.

Thank you fellow pre op and post op hippies.

Alice

SORRY about spelling error in title..should read I am concerned as have bad toothache etc

Ali

Hi alice,

Toothache itelf  is not a problem as much as the CAUSE of  the toothache.

The best thing is to get an appointment with your dentist asap. There may be something he/she can do but also you need reassurance.

Hugs,

Shirley

Thanks Shirley.  I have an appointment tomorrow..I mean what is the worst that could happen or don't I want to know?????

Alice

Hi Alice, I'm not sure but I would ythink the worst that could happen is that you need some anti-biotics from your GP. Other than that give the Consultant Secretary a ring and ask her, she will find out all the information you need. Hope it gets better soon.Just a thought have you any mouthwash? or salt water in warm water? that should help get rid of infection if there is any. Hope this helps Love Gill xxx

Thank you Gillcat..I made the mistake of putting the question to Google...scarey talk of revision surgery if infection spreads to blood.  I am SUCH a drama qween....and doing well...I hope.

Thanks Kids.

Alice.

Well,if worst comes to worst you GP will need to find an antibiotic that will not provoke an allergic reaction in you. That is probably trial  and error but not beyond the modern medics.

The dentist definitely will want to sort out any infection quickly before any other intervention. eg root canal work. For now good old paracetamol wiill have to do until tomorrow morning

Hi Alice, i broke a crown at 6 months and had to have the root removed. I was petrified!!! I got a course of antibiotics- just in case the dentist prescribed them. I was fine. I think there is a lot of debate as to whether they are necessary at the moment I seem to remember another similar post a while ago. God luck with it

Thank you for thtat..I don't think I could go through another op..not keen on the dentist either but so long as it isn't a root canal or extraction!

very grateful for the posts.

Aice

Im sure there wont be a problem alice and you have done absolutely the right thing booking an appointment with your dentist. If you need antibiotics, let your dentist know that you cant take certain ones and  they should be able to offer you an alternative or if all else fails see your doctor.

I lost my reply to yu but basically it was thanking the hippies as it is like talking things over and makes me feel more relaxed about things.

Love,

Alice

Feel more calm....just when you are on your own things get out of proportion don 't they..and looking it up on line is  not always a good plan!!

Thanks Catrin

Good morning Alice,

Dentist freaks me out too ... I agree with all comments -

good luck today - talk to your dentist about it, especially your concern about the probability of getting an infection -

let us know what happened okay? (i have dental work ahead of me and can feel a touch of pain hitting a tooth )

big warm hug

renee

Hello Renee..As before when I was apre op sacrdy you and others have come up trumps again.

Just off to get the bus to the very nice dentist .  All girls at my practice and all gentle and kind.

Grabbed your hug with open arms!

Alice

You must have an antibiotic because there is bleeding when

you go to the dentist. Get an antibiotic you can tolerate, ask you

surgeon what they put you on after you op, to be sure.

good luck, I hope you have a gentle dentist!

Cathie

I saw a wonderful polish dentist who I have not seen before.  Kind and gentle.  Took xrays and no sign as yet of any infection but they are going to 'keep an eye on me'.  I am rinsing with salt water and mouthwash.  I asked howlong one had to be so careful after a hip op..She said it seemed to depend on surgeon! But anything up to a year.

 Lovely posters on here.

Alice

It is not just dentist it is when bleeding is involved.

my Portuguese lady dentist is  tops, was yours a lady?. People have their

teeth fixed here when they are on holiday, less expensive

than most countries, and good dentists.

I hope you are sorted now. It is enough to concentrate on hip

recovery isn't it?

Cathie

Bon Dia..

I still have ache but no sgn of infection..She was kind and nice but as my insurrance is £400  a year and have to pay extr for anything like crowns...!!Lucy you living n POrtugal...North or South?  I used to go every year for 15 years..

Obrigada  ( Can't spell sorry)
