I am glad that I found this website a few weeks ago as I have gone through the same as many people on this website. A number of years ago I had a borderline underactive thyroid, was treated with thyroxine but after two weeks the doctor didn't think it was helping me and decided to take me off the medication. I have been treated for depression in the past but have always stated that there was something not functioning correctly but nobody seemed to listen. Ten years later and I am still having lots of symptoms which go hand-in-hand with an underactive thyroid. I have now been told that my thyroid is borderline underactive again and will probably go underactive in the future. The doctor will not put me on thyroxine as she doesn't think it will help and she also stated that it can cause osteoporosis in the future. My mother has an underactive thyroid and is taking thyroxine.

Frustrated & confused Sx

i am hypothyroid and also had to suffer the anti-depressants and the benefit of the health professionals "pull yourself together" routine. they didnt do the tests until my eyelids were so swollen i found it difficult to see. even then i nad to throw a temper tantrum in the surgery. i would even go as far as to say that i questioned my sanity.

Hi,

I have started taking thyroxine this week after being tested for thyroid problems. I've suffered from depression for quite a while and have had psychotherapy, counselling, a medical analysis from a BUPA psychologist. I was given anti-depressants in April because I felt I had to do something about it because I couldn't do much any more. After 3 months of the anti-depressants I told the Doctor there must be something else wrong and I didn't feel right and still couldn't do much. He finally gave me a blood test and found I was anaemic and also had an under active thyroid which he said took him by surprise. I have been worried because I don't know what it means long term. I'd be even more concerned if thyroxine did contribute to osteoporosis but I haven't heard of it yet. I hope the best for you and all who are suffering. I have been given 25mg thyroxine and will have a blood test in four weeks and then given an increase. The Doctor still wants me to take the anti depressants but I am trying to wean myself off them as they didn't do me any good except slow me down even more.

All the best,

Sarah:shock:
