HI, I am having my gallbladder out in 5 weeks , I first saw my Consultant about 6 weeks ago and he arrange for me to have a scan and gastroscopy to confirm i had gallstones and needed the operation , He explained the operation is done under anisthetic and takes between 60 and 90 minutes and then after being in recovery for a little while i should be able to go home the same day or first thing the next morning , My daughter had her gallbladder removed last year and after a couple of weeks she did get diarrhea IF she ate too much fats but when she realised what it was that started it she cut that out of her diet she says having her gallbladder out was the best thing she could have done as now she can eat and drink what she likes and not get any pain and doesn't get diarrhea anymore than anyone else , We live in Britain so everything will not be exactly the same but in the main it should be , I hope this helps a little to ease your anxiety .MAZ
Hello, I had my gallbladder out almost a year ago and I'm so happy I did. You will meet with the surgeon ahead of time. The surgery doesn't take very long and I was released as soon as I was coharent from surgery the same day.The first few weeks I thought I still had a gallstone in my bile duct (they will inject you with iodine to make sure you don't, but I'm allergic to iodine so they couldn't. It was one of the easiet surgeries I've ever had and the next day I was walking 10 mins every hour (as they instruct you to) so you don't get blood clots. Your stomach of course is sore for the first few days, but not as bad as I thought it would be. I do find to this day I CANNOT eat nuts and best to stay away from foods in high fat. I ate a hot dog today and looked on label 15 grams of fat. I thought I better only eat one. As far as diarrhea I have to watch my milk intake, so not sure if I have IBS or maybe all these years it was just my gallbladder problems, pain a lot alike. So I do still watch my fat intake. But basically take it easy the first few months. You'll know what you can eat or not eat. I also have trouble with coffee and sometimes foods with acid like tomato sauce. I had my surgery with Kaiser in Fontana they were wonderful. I will get nausea when I'm put to sleep and I told them this so they gave me a patch behind my ear for nauseous, it worked great. The Anesthesiologist was the best. I barely remember gong into the operating room (that was a first for me) and didn't feel all weird like I usually do being put to sleep. I believe praying works, I prayed for the whole team that worked on me. Good luck! Also they make 4 incisions in your stomach. For me the biggest one maybe 1 1/2-2 inches under my breast area (that's where they pull out your gallbladder) then they made a really small incision in belly buttton and 2 small incision on my right stomach side where they put the instruments for the surgery, you can watch the procedure on youtube, they inject air into your stomach to enlarge it for the surgery. After surgery I felt like I was pregnant, but it's no biggy, it goes down. I hope this helped you.
Some of your questions depend on your health insurance and what hospital and doctor you have in terms of how long you have to wait and so on. Unless you come into the ER, you will most likely have to meet your doctor and even have pre-surgery exams and blood work. Once again, all of that depends on the doctor and lab schedules.
For some people, there is a problem with diarrhea, nauseau and vomiting before and after the surgery. The doctors will tell you that it will go away "in time" (tho they don't really say how long) and it usually does anywhere from weeks to months. In honesty, as you can tell if you read comments here, for some people it can last for many months, but that doesn't mean that it will for you!! Most people have no problems at all!!
In terms of what the surgery itself is like, there are good sites on Google or some other search engine, even some with animation of the instruments and procedures, which I found educational. There are two ways which are used depending on your own health and condition, either a large-ish incision or laproscopically, which gives you 5 small incisions around your abdomen. Once again, check out some info on the internet for more complete details.
Some folks get scared with too much information, and others, like me, find it helpful to know as much as possible before hand. You know yourself, so if you feel overwhelemed by info, limit your searches. And come here often for support--this is a great and knowledgeable group of people.
Wishing you a very good experience!
